The INDIA bloc on Tuesday officially announced former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, scheduled to take place on September 9.

The announcement was made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who emphasised that Justice Reddy’s “long and distinguished legal and constitutional background” made him a consensus choice for the broad opposition alliance.

The move sets up a direct face-off with the NDA’s nominee CP Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra and senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu.

Who is Justice B Sudershan Reddy?

Born on July 8, 1946, B. Sudershan Reddy holds a B.A., LL.B. and began his legal career as an advocate at the Hyderabad Bar in December 1971.
Throughout his professional journey, he handled Writ and Civil matters at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and later served in multiple government positions, including:

• Government Pleader (1988–1990) at AP High Court

• Additional Standing Counsel (Central Government) in 1990

• Legal Adviser and Standing Counsel for Osmania University

He was elevated as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995, and subsequently appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in December 2005.

In January 2007, Justice Reddy was appointed to the Supreme Court of India, where he served until his retirement on July 8, 2011.

Opposition Opts for a Constitutional Voice

The INDIA bloc’s decision to field a non-political candidate with judicial credentials reflects its broader strategy of putting forward “neutral” and nationally respected figures in constitutional roles.
Sources within the alliance said that Justice Reddy’s legal background underscores the bloc’s commitment to “constitutional propriety, institutional integrity and democratic accountability”.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has fielded CP Radhakrishnan, a former state unit chief of the BJP and veteran of the RSS, signalling its own focus on regional and identity-based outreach—particularly in Tamil Nadu and the southern states.
