In a disturbing incident in Dharashiv district, Maharashtra, four men allegedly attacked the SUV of Namdeo Nikam, the sarpanch of Mesai Jawalga. The incident took place late on Thursday at around 10 pm near Tuljapur when Nikam was returning to his village from Barul.
The attackers, riding on two motorcycles, approached Nikam’s vehicle and first threw eggs on the front windshield. They then used a cement block, fashioned as a hammer, to break the windshield. In a shocking escalation, they threw a petrol-filled condom inside the vehicle, splashing the flammable fuel on it. Nikam and another occupant of the SUV were injured during the attack, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear.
The Tuljapur police have registered a case under section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which concerns the attempt to commit culpable homicide. Nikam, who resides in Pune and visits the village periodically, has stated that he has no known enemies in the region.
This attack has come amid growing outrage following the recent abduction and murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, earlier this month. The opposition has linked the state minister Dhananjay Munde to the case, alleging that Walmik Karad, a close aide of Munde, masterminded the murder.
As the Crime Investigation Department (CID) probes the murder, two other cases involving extortion and assault have also been transferred to the CID for further investigation.
This violent incident underscores the escalating tensions and risks faced by local leaders in Maharashtra. The state police’s response and the investigation into the broader conspiracy are expected to draw significant attention, given the political undertones tied to these attacks.
