In a significant operation, the Noida unit of the Special Task Force (STF) busted a fraudulent gang that was cheating NEET-UG aspirants by offering false promises of helping them clear the exam. Three individuals were arrested in connection with the scam, which had been operating for months, taking advantage of students’ aspirations and desperation for admission into medical colleges.
The Arrested Individuals
The arrested individuals were identified as Vikram Kumar Sahu (30), Dharampal Singh, and Aniket, all residents of Delhi. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), STF, Noida, Raj Kumar Mishra, the gang had been contacting NEET-UG aspirants, promising to help them clear the exam for a hefty fee. They would demand money from the aspirants’ family members under the pretense of facilitating their success in the exam.
Background of the Accused
The police investigation revealed that Vikram Kumar Sahu had previously secured an admission to the Biotechnology program at Vinayaka Mission University in Chennai in 2011. After completing his post-graduation, he moved to Delhi and met Dharampal Singh. Together, they set up a company called ‘Admission View’, which was initially involved in helping students secure college admissions. However, the real fraudulent activities began when they began targeting MBBS aspirants, offering them fake promises of securing admissions in exchange for large sums of money.
Sahu, Aniket, and Singh used the ‘Admission View’ company to collect data of students aspiring to pursue MBBS courses and used this data to contact the aspirants, promising them seats in medical colleges. They would demand Rs 5 lakh per student, falsely assuring them that they would secure a seat in a reputed medical college. After collecting the money, the accused would abscond without delivering on their promises.
The Shift to Shreyanvi EDU OPC Pvt Ltd
Despite receiving multiple complaints in 2023, the gang continued their fraudulent operations under a new company name, Shreyanvi EDU OPC Pvt Ltd. The name change allowed them to evade law enforcement attention and continue their deceitful activities targeting NEET-UG aspirants.
The Discovery and Arrest
As the NEET-UG exam approached, the accused once again began gathering data of aspirants, with a fresh set of false promises to help them clear the exam. A tip-off led to a swift operation by the Noida STF, resulting in the arrest of the three accused on Saturday. The police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and commenced a thorough investigation.
Seized Materials and Evidence
During the operation, the police seized a range of incriminating materials. These included 10 mobile phones, two Aadhaar cards, candidate data sheets, PAN cards, voter ID cards, a passport, a cheque book, and a car. These items will help in further investigation and could potentially lead to the discovery of other individuals or networks involved in the scam.
A Warning to Aspirants
This bust highlights the prevalence of fraud targeting students preparing for competitive exams like NEET-UG. It is a warning to both students and their families to remain vigilant and avoid falling for such scams. Authorities have advised candidates to approach official channels and reliable sources for help regarding exam preparations or admissions.
Authorities’ Action and Ongoing Investigation
The police have assured the public that the STF is working on identifying any further individuals involved in this criminal network. They have urged other victims of similar scams to come forward and file complaints. The Noida STF is committed to taking strict action against such fraudulent activities and protecting the interests of students.
Final Thoughts
The busting of this gang serves as an important reminder of the dangers students face while preparing for high-stakes exams like NEET-UG. With the authorities taking swift action and seizing evidence, it is hoped that such fraudulent activities will decrease and that students will be able to focus on their studies without the fear of being cheated.
