Gautam Gambhir, BJP MP from East Delhi, announces his decision to step away from active politics to prioritize his cricket commitments. He expresses gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their support. Speculation arises regarding his replacement, with Delhi BJP leaders Virender Sachdeva and Harsh Malhotra being potential candidates.
On Saturday, Gautam Gambhir made the decision to step away from active politics in order to refocus on his cricket commitments. He expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their support during his time in politics. Gambhir, who currently serves as a BJP MP representing the East Delhi seat, defeated Congress Party's Arvind Singh Lovely and AAP's Atishi in the 2019 elections.
In his announcement shared on X (previously Twitter), Gambhir stated, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!"
With Gambhir's departure from the political arena, speculation arises about who will fill his position. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Central Election Committee Meeting (CEC) recently took place, discussing decisions regarding Lok Sabha election seats across approximately 17 states. While the details of these decisions are awaited, it's anticipated that either Delhi BJP president Virender Sachdeva or party general secretary Harsh Malhotra could step in to replace Gambhir.
The upcoming Lok Sabha polls, expected in April-May, will feature a direct contest between the BJP and candidates from the INDIA bloc partners AAP and Congress on the seven seats in Delhi. AAP has already announced candidates for several seats, while Congress is yet to reveal its candidates in line with the seat-sharing agreement with AAP.
