Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is poised to have a significant impact on India’s retail industry, with potential productivity gains of 35-37% over the next five years, according to the latest report by EY India. The report, titled "The AIdea of India: 2025," highlights the growing adoption of AI-driven solutions across various sectors, including retail, consumer, and e-commerce, with businesses leveraging GenAI for a wide range of applications.

Rising Adoption of GenAI Solutions

As per the report, 48% of Indian businesses have already initiated proof of concept (PoC) projects for GenAI solutions, while 32% are planning to invest in AI adoption or have already allocated budgets for its implementation. This rapid uptake of AI technologies indicates the significant transformation underway in the Indian retail landscape.

Productivity Impact of GenAI

The expected productivity boost from GenAI is substantial, particularly in areas such as pricing, promotions, and customer experiences. Angshuman Bhattacharjya, Partner at EY-Parthenon, predicts that the productivity impact in these areas could range from 40% to 45%. In addition, store operations are expected to become 38% to 40% more efficient due to AI-driven automation and optimization.

Retailers are increasingly adopting AI to personalize shopping experiences, optimize demand forecasting, and improve warehouse operations. AI is also being used for manufacturing quality control and predictive maintenance, demonstrating the broad range of applications for this technology within the retail sector.

Global AI Trends Reflecting Retail Transformation

The global trend of AI adoption in the retail industry is gaining momentum, with leading brands such as H&M, Coca-Cola, and Amazon Go already integrating AI technologies to transform their operations. These brands are seeing the same positive impacts on efficiency, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction that Indian companies are expected to experience.

Immediate and Long-term Benefits of GenAI

The immediate benefits of GenAI include cost reduction (56% of survey respondents), revenue growth, and enhanced customer satisfaction (44%). However, the report also stresses that the long-term success of GenAI in retail will depend on striking a balance between automation and human-centric experiences. The ability to integrate AI technologies while maintaining a personalized approach to customer service will be crucial for the sustainability and growth of retail companies.

In conclusion, Generative AI represents a transformative force within the Indian retail sector, offering tremendous opportunities for businesses to boost productivity, optimize operations, and enhance customer experiences. The key to success will lie in leveraging AI as an enabler while maintaining a human touch for customer interactions. As AI adoption continues to grow, India’s retail industry is set to experience significant growth, making AI-driven solutions a crucial element for the future of retail in India.
