In a significant move for India’s renewable energy sector, Gensol Engineering Limited (BSE: 542851) (NSE: GENSOL) has partnered with Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd. to develop India’s first Green Hydrogen Valley project in Pune. This groundbreaking project will focus on the production of green hydrogen, a clean energy source that is set to revolutionize the industrial sector, particularly the specialty chemicals industry.
The partnership between Gensol and Matrix marks a major milestone in the country's transition toward sustainable energy. The Green Hydrogen Valley project will be developed on a Build Own and Operate (BOO) basis and will supply green hydrogen to specialty chemical companies in the Pune region. The project guarantees a firm offtake agreement for 20 years, ensuring a stable and long-term supply of green hydrogen to meet the energy needs of the chemical sector.
Anmol Jaggi, Managing Director of Gensol Engineering, expressed his pride in leading the development of the Green Hydrogen Valley project, highlighting the Government of India’s efforts in promoting green hydrogen initiatives through the Department of Science & Technology (DST). He stated that this project would significantly contribute to developing the green hydrogen economy in India, especially by providing round-the-clock (RTC) green hydrogen to support the specialty chemical sector in Pune.
The partnership between Gensol and Matrix is facilitated by the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in the Kurkumbh region of Pune. The project aims to establish a state-of-the-art green hydrogen generation plant, utilizing electrolysis technology to produce hydrogen in a sustainable manner. This green hydrogen will be used not only in specialty chemicals but also to advance green steel and green ammonia production, helping India move closer to achieving its net-zero carbon emissions targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Chirag Kotecha, Whole-time Director at Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd., emphasized the importance of this project in fulfilling India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. According to Kotecha, this project represents a key step in advancing India's green hydrogen generation capabilities and will serve as a model for similar projects across the country. The competitive tender process selected Gensol and Matrix as the best bidders, both technically and commercially, to set up the plant on a BOO basis.
The collaboration between Gensol and Matrix will continue to evolve, with both companies leveraging their expertise in renewable energy and green hydrogen to expand into green hydrogen derivatives, such as green steel and green ammonia. These projects will further enhance India’s ability to produce sustainable energy and develop its green hydrogen ecosystem.
The success of this project could open new doors for the growth of green hydrogen production across various industries in India. As the demand for clean energy solutions grows, Gensol and Matrix are well-positioned to play a crucial role in driving India’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The partnership between these two companies demonstrates a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the future of renewable energy in India.
Moreover, the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched by the Government of India sets ambitious goals to make India a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen. This project in Pune is just the beginning of what could become a major transformation in how India generates and uses energy.
