Gensol and Matrix collaborate to create India’s first Green Hydrogen Valley in Pune, Maharashtra.

The project will supply green hydrogen to the specialty chemical sector with a 20-year offtake agreement.

Supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this development aims to accelerate India's green hydrogen economy.

Gensol Engineering Limited and Matrix Gas & Renewables Limited have officially secured a project to set up India’s first Green Hydrogen Valley in Pune, marking a significant step forward in India’s efforts toward green energy. This joint venture between the two companies represents a landmark achievement in the growing domain of green hydrogen production in India. The Green Hydrogen Valley will be developed in collaboration with National Chemicals Laboratories (NCL) in the Kurkumbh region of Pune, focusing on hydrogen production through electrolysis.

The Green Hydrogen Valley is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable energy, aligning with India's vision for achieving net-zero carbon emissions. According to Anmol Jaggi, Managing Director of Gensol Engineering, the project will be built on a Build Own and Operate (BOO) basis. This green hydrogen production facility will supply green hydrogen to the specialty chemical sector in Pune, ensuring round-the-clock (RTC) operations. Matrix Gas & Renewables, led by Chirag Kotecha, has reiterated its commitment to supporting the National Green Hydrogen Mission, noting that this project represents a massive step forward in reducing India’s carbon footprint.

The partnership between Gensol and Matrix will not only cater to the specialty chemical industry but also provide a gateway to explore green ammonia and green steel production, two critical areas for reducing carbon emissions in industrial sectors. The companies aim to leverage their unique expertise to contribute significantly to the future of India’s hydrogen economy. Both firms share a history of collaboration in renewable energy projects, and this green hydrogen production plant further cements their position as leaders in India’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

The Role of the National Green Hydrogen Mission

India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, led by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), is designed to accelerate the development of green hydrogen infrastructure across the country. By setting up facilities such as the Green Hydrogen Valley, India is positioning itself as a global leader in green energy. The electrolysis route being used for this project ensures that green hydrogen is produced with minimal environmental impact, tapping into renewable energy sources for sustainable production.

The Green Hydrogen Valley in Pune will not only support green hydrogen production but also pave the way for research and development (R&D) opportunities in this field. By partnering with NCL, Gensol and Matrix aim to establish cutting-edge facilities for R&D in green hydrogen applications, ensuring India remains at the forefront of this technological revolution. The project was awarded through a competitive tender, with Gensol and Matrix emerging as the top bidders based on both technical and commercial criteria.
