In the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed that three of the deceased were from her state. The attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, has left the nation shaken, and Mamata Banerjee has expressed deep sorrow while offering her support to the affected families.

Mamata Banerjee took to social media, providing updates about the tragic incident. In her post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the Chief Minister identified the three victims from West Bengal as Bitan Adhikari, a resident of Baishnabghata in Kolkata; Samir Guha, from Sakher Bazar in Kolkata; and Manish Ranjan, from Jhalda in Purulia. She acknowledged that this was indeed a "grim hour" for the victims' families, and no words could adequately express her condolences.

Mamata Banerjee further assured the bereaved families that the state government was doing everything it could to ensure the bodies of the deceased were returned to Kolkata. "All arrangements are being put up by our administration at Delhi Airport to help the family members of the victims and their onward journey to Kolkata," Banerjee stated. She added that the flight carrying the bodies was expected to arrive in Kolkata at around 8:30 PM on the same day.

Mamata also reaffirmed her personal involvement, ensuring that all necessary steps were being taken.

In her message, Mamata Banerjee described this as a "grim hour for all of us" and conveyed her heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased. "No word is enough as condolence for their families, even while my heart goes out to them. We stand by the families," she said, underscoring the support from her administration.

This attack, which has been claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a militant outfit believed to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), occurred on the afternoon of April 22, 2025, in Pahalgam’s tranquil Baisaran Valley. According to eyewitness reports, two to three gunmen, wearing military fatigues, opened fire indiscriminately, creating chaos and panic among tourists. The terrorists reportedly fired from close range, killing at least 26 people and injuring several others.

The terrorist attack has been described as one of the most brutal assaults on civilians in Jammu & Kashmir in recent years. Many of the victims were tourists visiting the area, a popular destination for holidaymakers, particularly during the summer season.

Witnesses recalled the horrifying moments as people fled the scene in fear. One eyewitness described how the chaos unfolded, stating, "We were standing in the stand, and customers had gone to the upper side. At around 2:45 PM, people started running around. When we asked, we found that a gunshot had been fired…” Another witness recalled the continuous sound of gunfire, with people desperately trying to escape without looking back.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally, with world leaders offering condolences and support to India. Mamata Banerjee’s response reflects the sorrow and shock that has gripped the country in the wake of this heinous attack. The West Bengal Chief Minister has committed to providing full support to the victims' families during this tragic time, while also reiterating her state's resolve to stand against such acts of violence.

As India mourns the loss of innocent lives in Pahalgam, authorities continue their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of its citizens. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the region and the country's fight against terrorism.
