  • Legislatures in Liberia and Sierra Leone observed tributes for victims of Pahalgam terror attack, showing solidarity with India

  • Delegation highlighted India’s new security posture, called for unified international response against cross-border terrorism

In a significant boost to India’s international diplomacy on security matters, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra announced that the country’s message of zero tolerance towards terrorism has received strong international backing during a recent four-nation outreach campaign. The all-party delegation, led by Shiv Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with a unified national message: to call out Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and to promote a cohesive global stance against terror threats.

The delegation's visit was organised in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people and was attributed to Pakistan-based terror outfits. The Indian delegation sought to draw global attention to the scale and continuity of cross-border terrorism affecting India over the past four decades and to correct global narratives often distorted by misinformation.

A Diplomatic Effort Rooted in National Unity

According to Sasmit Patra, who spoke to the ANI upon his return, the delegation’s engagements in all four countries were productive and supportive of India’s position. “All the meetings across these four countries have been very positive and constructive,” Patra stated. “We explained India’s policy on terrorism, highlighted Operation Sindoor, and presented facts regarding the new normal in our national security strategy.”

He added that this initiative wasn’t just about bilateral engagements but also about building global solidarity around a shared security agenda. “The international community must come together as one planet to speak in one voice against terrorism,” he emphasized.

Powerful International Gestures of Support

One of the most poignant moments of the tour came during the delegation’s visit to Sierra Leone and Liberia. Legislatures in both nations paid solemn tributes to those killed in the Pahalgam attack.

“In Liberia, the Senate stood in unison to remember the victims. In Sierra Leone, their Parliament paid tribute to those who lost their lives. These are powerful gestures of support that show how our message resonated,” Patra explained.

Such acts demonstrated genuine empathy and alignment with India’s counter-terrorism narrative. Patra further mentioned similar support from other countries visited by sub-groups of the delegation, indicating widespread international acknowledgment of Pakistan's complicity in cross-border terror activities.

Broad Political Representation Strengthened the Mission

The strength of this diplomatic initiative stemmed from the multi-party representation within the delegation. Members included BJP leaders Bansuri Swaraj, Atul Garg, SS Ahluwalia, and Manan Kumar Mishra, along with Indian Union Muslim League MP ET Mohammed Basheer, and former Indian Ambassador Sujan Chinoy. Each group was assigned specific countries, reflecting a coordinated and broad-based approach to international outreach.

By including members from across India’s political spectrum, the initiative projected a united front on national security issues, transcending domestic political differences to present a cohesive and clear diplomatic message.

Operation Sindoor and the ‘New Normal’ in Indian Security

The delegation also used the opportunity to extensively discuss Operation Sindoor, which reflects India’s evolving security posture following a series of attacks linked to Pakistan-based actors. The messaging centered around the idea that India now adopts a proactive, resolute response to terror threats rather than a reactive one.

“We highlighted the new normal in India’s security posture. The world needs to understand that India is ready and capable of responding decisively to terrorism,” Patra emphasized.

By showcasing India’s counter-terrorism framework, including policy shifts, military readiness, and diplomatic pressure, the delegation aimed to counter misinformation and reaffirm India’s commitment to peace and stability.

Context: The Pahalgam Terror Attack and Rising Tensions

The diplomatic mission gained urgency after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which intensified security tensions between India and Pakistan. This was followed by a four-day military confrontation, prompting India to launch this all-party diplomatic effort.

The Pahalgam attack, which involved improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and automatic gunfire, was a stark reminder of the persistent terror threats in Jammu and Kashmir. Security analysts widely believe it was orchestrated with tacit or direct support from Pakistan-based groups.

India’s Global Narrative Strategy

The delegation's mission aligns with a broader public diplomacy push to change how the global media and international institutions perceive India’s counter-terror operations. In recent years, India has taken proactive steps in multilateral platforms like the United Nations, FATF (Financial Action Task Force), and G20 forums to spotlight state-sponsored terrorism.

The tour by the all-party delegation served as a strategic continuation of this long-term diplomatic effort, attempting to build alliances with developing nations that may be vulnerable to misinformation or influence from countries sympathetic to Pakistan’s narrative.

Conclusion: A Diplomatic Success Rooted in Unity and Clarity

India’s message of zero tolerance towards terrorism received an unequivocal endorsement during this four-nation diplomatic outreach. The delegation’s efforts in building international consensus, countering misinformation, and showcasing India’s unity on national security issues mark a new chapter in Indian diplomacy.

This development comes at a time when cross-border threats remain high, and international narratives often fall prey to distorted versions of India’s actions. By taking the message directly to foreign legislatures and leaders, India is reclaiming its voice on the global stage, insisting on accountability for terror sponsors and advocating for a shared, global stand against terrorism.
