The Indian government is taking significant steps toward improving road safety and traffic management through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and other innovative technologies. During the 12th Traffic InfraTech Expo, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, outlined a comprehensive plan to modernize the monitoring of traffic violations and enhance the enforcement of penalties.
Gadkari announced that the government is considering the adoption of satellite-based systems for toll collection, aiming to improve efficiency and transparency in the process. This modernization effort reflects a broader strategy to leverage technological advancements in the transport sector. He indicated that private sector experts would be engaged to develop cutting-edge solutions aimed at reducing traffic incidents. An expert committee will review proposals from startups and industry leaders within three months, ensuring the most effective strategies for enhancing road safety are identified.
Emphasizing the critical role of advanced engineering solutions, Gadkari noted that integrating these technologies into traffic law enforcement is essential for improving overall road safety. He underscored the necessity for high-quality surveillance technology to effectively monitor and deter traffic violations. To ensure a competitive and cost-effective approach, he invited participation from smaller firms in government tenders, thereby fostering innovation in the sector.
With India currently recording around 500,000 road accidents annually, resulting in significant fatalities and injuries, Gadkari reiterated the urgency of conducting highway safety audits. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that India's road infrastructure would soon surpass that of the United States, highlighting the economic advantages associated with well-developed transport networks.
In addition to these initiatives, Gadkari revealed that he had received 360 proposals for ropeway and cable car projects, valued at approximately US$ 7.93 billion. He encouraged international collaboration on over 300 tunnel projects, emphasizing the need to keep costs manageable given India's low per capita income.
The integration of AI and innovative technologies, along with the emphasis on infrastructure development and safety audits, marks a pivotal shift in India's approach to managing road traffic and enhancing safety measures.
