Context of recent India-Pakistan tensions following Operation Sindoor and ongoing military de-escalation efforts
The Union government is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to articulate India’s stance on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing military tensions with Pakistan by involving a broad spectrum of political leaders, experts, and former diplomats. According to sources quoted by Hindustan Times, the government plans to deploy teams including opposition parliamentarians to key regions worldwide to effectively communicate India’s point of view.
Notably, prominent opposition figures such as Congress leader and Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs Chair Shashi Tharoor, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi are expected to be part of this mega diplomatic outreach.
Azad’s inclusion is significant given his deep roots and experience related to Kashmir, making him a credible voice on regional and cross-border terrorism issues. Owaisi has emerged as a strong and vocal critic of Pakistan within the opposition following the Pahalgam attack, bolstering India’s narrative internationally.
Broad Political Engagement
Beyond these leaders, the government has also reached out to political parties including the Janata Dal (United), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and NCP-Pawar faction to participate in this outreach effort.
The Narendra Modi-led administration began consultations with parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, former diplomats, and think tanks in the past week to design a comprehensive and multi-pronged diplomatic campaign.
Structure and Scope of the Outreach
Plans are underway to form up to eight separate groups, each assigned to different global regions such as Europe, North America, and West Asia. The teams will visit key international capitals and engage with lawmakers, government officials, and think tanks, particularly focusing on India’s strategic partners and countries of the Global South.
The primary aim of this outreach is to convey India’s position on the cross-border linkages related to the Pahalgam terror attack and the retaliatory Operation Sindoor, highlighting India’s efforts to combat terrorism and maintain regional stability.
Background: Escalation and De-escalation
The diplomatic campaign follows a tense four-day confrontation between India and Pakistan, which saw the use of drones, missiles, and long-range weapons on both sides, raising fears of a broader conflict. India’s surgical strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor marked a significant military response to the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
