Key Points:
GRSE signed a contract with M/s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler for constructing the 5th multi-purpose vessel (MPV) of 7,500 DWT.
This deal is part of the option agreement for procuring four additional MPVs, making a total of eight vessels.
GRSE has built over 790 platforms, including 109 warships, making it a leader in Indian defence shipbuilding.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a premier warship-building company under the Ministry of Defence, has achieved another major milestone in its quest to strengthen its shipbuilding portfolio with the signing of a contract for the construction and delivery of its 5th multi-purpose vessel (MPV). The shipyard, known for its illustrious history in the defence and commercial shipbuilding sectors, entered into this contract with M/s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG on October 3rd, 2024.
The signing of the contract is a significant step in the long-standing relationship between the two entities, following the ‘Option Agreement’ previously established. This 7500 DWT MPV is the fifth of eight such vessels being constructed by GRSE for Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler. The approximate order value for the eight vessels is estimated to be around 108 million USD.
The multi-purpose vessels being constructed under this agreement are designed to meet the diverse needs of modern cargo shipping. With a length of 120 metres and a width of 17 metres, each vessel boasts a carrying capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes. These ships are versatile, designed to handle a range of cargo, including bulk, general, and project cargoes. The ability to carry containers on hatch covers and specific design features that allow for the transportation of large windmill blades further highlights the engineering ingenuity behind these vessels.
The collaboration between GRSE and M/s Carsten Rehder is an excellent example of India’s growing prowess in the global shipbuilding sector. The shipyard’s expertise in delivering high-quality vessels tailored to specific customer requirements, both domestically and internationally, is reflected in the trust placed by Carsten Rehder in GRSE’s capabilities.
This fifth MPV follows the successful deliveries of earlier vessels, with the entire project being completed by the Kolkata-based shipyard. The contract signing took place in the presence of notable dignitaries, including Cdr Shantanu Bose (Retd), GRSE’s Director (Shipbuilding), and Mr Jonas Meinhardt, Managing Director of Carsten Rehder, alongside other senior officials.
Historical Legacy of GRSE
GRSE’s legacy dates back to 1884 when it was established as a small workshop to repair vessels for the River Steam Navigation Company. Since then, the shipyard has grown into a premier Schedule ‘A’ Mini Ratna Category I company under the Government of India, providing its expertise in building warships, multi-purpose vessels, and other specialized platforms for defence and civilian use.
In 1961, GRSE became the first shipyard of independent India to build a warship for the Indian Navy, delivering the Seaward Defence Boat (SDB) INS Ajay. Over the years, the shipyard’s reputation has only strengthened, with over 790 platforms built, including 109 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and various foreign nations. GRSE has also made a name for itself in the international market, having built the first-ever Indian export warship, the CGS Barracuda, for the Government of Mauritius.
Recent international projects include vessels like the SCG PS Zoroaster for Seychelles and MV Ma Lisha, an ocean-going cargo and passenger ferry for Guyana. These projects have helped GRSE solidify its position as a trusted partner for international shipbuilding needs.
Engineering Capabilities and Modernization
The engineering capabilities of GRSE extend beyond shipbuilding to include manufacturing deck machinery, marine pumps, and even pre-fabricated portable steel bridges. The shipyard’s commitment to excellence is evident through its state-of-the-art research and development facilities and VR Lab, which support its in-house design capabilities. This has allowed GRSE to develop cutting-edge solutions for both naval and civilian applications.
GRSE’s commitment to growth and modernization has led to infrastructure improvements that enable the shipyard to construct up to 24 ships simultaneously. This infrastructure, combined with a highly skilled workforce, has allowed GRSE to deliver complex shipbuilding projects on time and within budget, making it a global leader in the defence and shipbuilding industry.
The Ministry of Defence has recognized GRSE’s contributions to the country’s defence and engineering capabilities through several accolades, including the Raksha Mantri Award for designing the most silent ship for ASW operations and the Defence Minister’s Award for in-house design efforts.
Conclusion
The 5th MPV contract represents GRSE’s continued pursuit of excellence in both defence and commercial shipbuilding. The shipyard’s commitment to delivering world-class vessels, whether for domestic or international clients, solidifies its position as a leader in the global shipbuilding industry. With the completion of this contract, GRSE will once again demonstrate its ability to meet the growing demands of modern maritime commerce, showcasing India’s rising stature in the global shipbuilding market.
