In a historic decision, Mahant Prem Das, the chief priest of the Hanuman Garhi Temple in Ayodhya, will break a 300-year-old tradition by leaving the temple premises to visit the newly constructed Ram Mandir on April 30, 2025. This significant journey marks the first time in centuries that a Gaddi Nasheen, or chief priest, of Hanuman Garhi will step outside the temple's 52-bigha grounds. The priest’s visit to the Ram Mandir is a momentous event, especially considering the long-standing tradition that has always kept the temple's head priest within the premises, making this decision even more remarkable.
Traditionally, the Gaddi Nasheen of Hanuman Garhi was prohibited from leaving the temple's grounds, a custom that dates back to the temple's establishment in the 18th century. The tradition was so strict that the chief priest was not allowed to even appear before local courts. However, this age-old rule is now being altered for a special reason—Mahant Prem Das’s spiritual desire to visit the Ram Mandir. According to sources from the temple, Mahant Prem Das has been sharing for several months that Lord Hanuman has been appearing in his dreams, instructing him to visit the Ram temple. This divine message led him to express his wish to the Panch (members) of the Nirvani Akhara, who, after careful deliberation, gave their unanimous consent to allow the visit.
On the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, Mahant Prem Das will lead a grand procession from Hanuman Garhi to the Ram Lalla temple. The procession will be a spectacle, featuring elephants, camels, and horses, and will carry the Akhara’s 'Nishaan' (insignia). The event will also see the presence of Naga sadhus, their disciples, local devotees, and traders. At around 7 a.m., the procession will halt at the banks of the Saryu River, where Mahant Prem Das and the procession participants will take part in a ritual bath, a symbolic purification, before continuing on their way to the Ram Mandir.
Mahant Prem Das, 70, holds the title of 'Gaddi Nasheen', a position that has traditionally kept him tied to the Hanuman Garhi Temple. His decision to break this tradition reflects his strong spiritual calling and marks a new chapter in the temple’s history. As the procession heads towards the Ram Mandir, the city of Ayodhya is set to witness an event of religious and cultural significance that celebrates faith, tradition, and the evolving role of spiritual leadership in contemporary times.
This move not only underscores the importance of the Ram Mandir in the hearts of Hindus but also signifies a shift in religious practices that have long been held sacred. Mahant Prem Das’s journey will undoubtedly be remembered as a landmark moment in the history of Hanuman Garhi Temple and Ayodhya's spiritual heritage.
