In a powerful and emotional address, Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has launched a scathing attack on Muhammad Yunus, the country’s interim leader. Speaking virtually from New York, Hasina accused Yunus of being the mastermind behind a genocide that has targeted minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu community. Hasina’s remarks came during her first public address since fleeing Bangladesh four months ago, which was prompted by escalating violence and attacks on minorities.

Accusations of Genocide and Persecution of Minorities

Hasina, who is currently living in India, pointed out that places of worship in Bangladesh, including Hindu temples, Christian churches, and Buddhist shrines, have been destroyed amid rising political violence. She claimed that eleven churches had been razed, and temples and Buddhist shrines had been broken. In her address, Hasina noted, "Hindus, Buddhists, Christians — no one has been spared", highlighting the discrimination and violence faced by the country’s minority communities under Yunus’s leadership.

Hasina raised serious concerns about the lack of justice for the victims of these attacks, especially after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, an ISKCON monk, who was detained following protests by the Hindu community. In a statement aimed directly at Yunus, Hasina asked, "What is this persecution of minorities for? Why are they being ruthlessly persecuted and attacked?"

The Alleged Threats to Hasina’s Life

Hasina also took the opportunity to shed light on the alleged assassination plans against her and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, which she claimed were orchestrated in a similar fashion to the 1975 assassination of their father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In her speech, Hasina recalled that she had been forced to leave Bangladesh in August due to the violent atmosphere. "When people were dying indiscriminately, I decided I should leave," Hasina said, acknowledging that the situation had grown more volatile since her departure.

The former Prime Minister described how armed protesters were directed toward the Ganabhaban (the Prime Minister’s official residence). She revealed that security forces were prepared to open fire, which could have caused further bloodshed. However, she ordered them not to fire, emphasizing the intensity of the political crisis that led to her forced exit from the country.

Yunus’ Role in the Political Crisis

Sheikh Hasina did not hold back in accusing Yunus of orchestrating these violent events. She stated, “In reality, Yunus has been involved in genocide in a meticulously designed manner. The masterminds — the student coordinators and Yunus — are behind this genocide.” This strong accusation aimed to paint Yunus as a central figure in the violence against the minority communities in Bangladesh, even as the government has failed to take significant action to address these concerns.

Her speech pointed to the political motives behind the violence, which she believed were designed to undermine her leadership and the democratic institutions of the country. She accused opposition forces and certain political groups of inciting unrest, contributing to the chaotic situation in Bangladesh.

Hasina’s Continued Commitment to the People

Despite the turmoil, Hasina reiterated her commitment to the people of Bangladesh. She emphasized that her primary concern has always been the welfare of the citizens, especially the minorities who have been the victims of violence and political manipulation. She called on international attention to the political crisis unfolding in her country and sought to highlight the growing concerns about the human rights violations taking place under Yunus’s interim government.

Her speech was not only a critique of Yunus and his government but also a call for justice for the victims of the violence. Hasina expressed her determination to continue fighting for the rights of the minorities and to restore peace to Bangladesh, despite the challenges she faces from within and outside the country.

Conclusion: A Divided Bangladesh

The political division in Bangladesh has reached new heights, with Sheikh Hasina and Muhammad Yunus both asserting their influence over the country’s future. While Hasina focuses on addressing the persecution of minorities and ensuring justice for the victims, Yunus’s government is battling accusations of mismanagement and failing to protect the country’s vulnerable communities.

The situation remains tense, and the international community is closely monitoring the political developments in Bangladesh. The role of religious minorities in the country and their right to safety will continue to be at the forefront of Bangladesh's political crisis. Hasina’s public address has shed light on the severe political tensions and set the stage for what promises to be a continued battle for control over the future of the country.
