On March 17, 2025, Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC), in collaboration with Tata Projects Limited (TPL), announced a major milestone in its infrastructure journey. The joint venture secured a significant contract worth approximately Rs. 2,191 crore for the construction of an 8.65 km underground corridor for the Indore Metro Phase 1 project. This underground segment, part of the larger Indore Metro initiative, holds a special significance as it is the first and only underground package in the project.

HCC, which holds a 55% share in the joint venture, is set to contribute Rs. 1,205 crore to the project. The scope of work involves the construction of a 11.32 km long tunnel using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), along with the development of seven underground stations. These stations will be strategically located at high-traffic points in Indore, including Indore Railway Station, Rajwada, Chota Ganpati, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF/Kalani Nagar, and the Airport. The tunnel will connect a ramp located east of Indore Railway Station to a ramp located west of Airport Station, providing essential connectivity to the city's metro network.

The contract forms a crucial part of the 31.32 km Indore Metro Phase 1 project, which aims to transform public transportation in the city by providing a modern, efficient metro system. The Indore Metro is a key project for Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), as it will serve as an important infrastructure development in the state, addressing the growing transportation needs of Indore's residents and visitors.

HCC's expertise in constructing complex infrastructure projects, particularly metro systems, is well recognized. The company has been actively involved in numerous metro projects across India, including Mumbai Metro Line III, where it is constructing 4 km of twin tunnels and four stations, and Chennai Metro, where it is executing two major packages. Furthermore, HCC has contributed significantly to the construction of other major metro systems, including the Delhi Metro, Bangalore Metro, Mumbai Metro Line I, and Kolkata Metro, further solidifying its reputation in the metro construction space.

The success of this project aligns with HCC's vision of building responsible infrastructure that drives India's growth and development. With nearly a 100-year engineering heritage, HCC has played a pivotal role in the development of India’s infrastructure landscape. The company has been involved in constructing a significant portion of India’s hydropower and nuclear power generation capacities, expressways, highways, complex tunneling projects, and bridges.

In the metro sector, HCC has an extensive track record. The company's ability to deliver large-scale, complex projects is demonstrated in its ongoing contributions to India's expanding metro network. The new contract with Tata Projects Limited marks another important step in HCC's journey toward becoming a leading player in metro construction and other infrastructure sectors, including transportation, power, and water.

With this contract, HCC reinforces its commitment to India's metro expansion plan, which is rapidly transforming the urban transport landscape. The company’s work on the Indore Metro will not only contribute to the region’s economic growth but will also provide an environmentally sustainable, efficient, and safe transportation option for the city's residents.

As HCC moves forward with this project, it continues to demonstrate its leadership in the infrastructure development sector. The company's experience and dedication to delivering high-quality solutions will be instrumental in ensuring the success of the Indore Metro Phase 1 project and its future endeavors in the metro and infrastructure space.

In conclusion, this Rs. 2,191 crore contract is not just a significant business win for HCC and Tata Projects Limited, but it also represents a major leap forward in Indore's public transportation infrastructure. With the construction of underground metro corridors and stations, Indore Metro will play an integral role in improving the city’s connectivity, making travel more convenient and efficient for its growing population. HCC is excited about the opportunity to contribute to this transformative project and looks forward to continuing its work on metro projects across India.
