India Meteorological Department warns heavy rain and thunderstorms over western coast and southern states for next week
Heavy rains and hailstorms have severely disrupted normal life across several major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. In Delhi, a powerful hailstorm on Wednesday uprooted trees, caused widespread power outages and led to massive traffic jams due to waterlogging. Local media reported four deaths and more than a dozen injuries linked to the storm.
Delhi airport, one of the busiest in India, experienced flight delays with nearly 50 flights affected and around a dozen diverted due to heavy showers. Passengers onboard a flight to Srinagar endured violent turbulence caused by the storm, with videos showing frightened passengers as the aircraft trembled. Although the flight landed safely, images of possible damage to the plane circulated online.
Mumbai also faced flooding in parts of the city after pre-monsoon showers clogged sewers, with videos showing waste and plastic floating in waterlogged streets. Social media users criticised authorities for poor drainage and waste management. Earlier this week, Bengaluru was brought to a halt by incessant rain, resulting in four deaths and severe waterlogging that flooded homes and stranded vehicles.
The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the western coast for the next 6 to 7 days. Thunderstorms are expected across nearly a dozen states, especially in southern India.
India receives 80 percent of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September, which is critical for farmers and the economy. However, experts warn that climate change is causing erratic weather patterns including unseasonal rains, flash floods and droughts, which threaten the livelihoods of millions across the country.
These events highlight ongoing challenges faced by Indian cities in managing infrastructure, waste and disaster preparedness in the face of increasingly extreme weather. The impact on daily life, transport, and safety underscores the need for urgent action on climate resilience and urban planning.
