As the southwest monsoon continues to intensify, several parts of India are experiencing severe weather disruptions. On Monday, June 16, 2025, heavy rainfall hit Mumbai, disrupting flight operations, while Kerala and Karnataka districts have been placed under red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Mumbai Faces Monsoon Disruption
In Mumbai, persistent downpour since the early morning hours led to delays in flight arrivals and departures at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Airlines have issued advisories, asking passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. The runway was waterlogged, and several low-lying areas of the city also reported water accumulation, leading to traffic congestion and disruption of local train schedules.
According to IMD, moderate to heavy rain will continue over Mumbai and the Konkan region for the next 48 hours. Authorities have issued alerts for coastal safety and urged people to stay indoors unless necessary.
Kerala on Red Alert
In Kerala, the southwest monsoon has brought continuous and intense rainfall over the last several days. As a precaution, a holiday was declared for educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam districts on Monday.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents in landslide-prone and low-lying flood zones to remain alert and follow instructions from local officials. Emergency teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts, and control rooms are operating round the clock.
Karnataka Declares School Holidays
In Karnataka, several districts including Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga are experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. IMD has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, prompting district administrations to declare a holiday for all schools on Monday.
Local officials are monitoring river levels, as multiple streams and water bodies are nearing danger marks. In Chikkamagaluru and Hassan, heavy rains have led to flood-like conditions in low-lying areas, while in Shivamogga, waterlogging and road damage have been reported.
IMD Warning for Guwahati and Northeast
Meanwhile, the northeastern region, particularly Guwahati, is also on alert. The IMD has predicted cloudy weather with heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two to three days. An official IMD release on Sunday noted that Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to receive high-intensity showers due to the current monsoonal trough.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from riverbanks and landslide-prone zones. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has activated district-level emergency units.
Travel and Commuter Advisory
Authorities across affected states are advising people to stay updated via official IMD bulletins, avoid venturing into flooded areas, and keep emergency kits ready. In Mumbai, BEST buses have been rerouted, and local trains are running with delays due to waterlogging.
In Kerala and Karnataka, all trekking activities and pilgrimages to hilly regions have been suspended temporarily. The Chardham route in Uttarakhand has also been affected by continuous rain, though no additional alerts have been issued so far.
Southwest Monsoon Strengthens Nationwide
The IMD has stated that the southwest monsoon has advanced significantly into central and northern India. As the monsoon gains strength, more states are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days, including Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, and parts of Odisha and Bihar.
Experts warn that while the monsoon brings relief from heatwaves, the rapid onset of heavy rainfall without preparation increases flood risks in urban and semi-urban areas. States have been directed to ensure clearing of storm drains, readiness of disaster response teams, and timely alerts to vulnerable populations
