  • Jammu region sees intense rainfall leading to school shutdowns in Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch districts.

  • Uttarkashi rescue operations stall due to continuous rains, affecting disaster relief work.

  • Heavy rains force Kedarnath Yatra suspension, with safety measures taken for pilgrims.

The monsoon season has once again shown its power across North India, bringing with it heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers, and disrupted daily life in multiple states. As rains intensified over the past 24 hours, several regions witnessed floods, landslides, and road blockages, causing inconvenience to thousands of residents and travellers.

In the Jammu region, rainfall reached alarming levels, forcing district administrations to take preventive measures to safeguard lives. Schools in Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch have been shut to ensure the safety of students, with authorities warning of possible flash floods and landslides in hilly areas. Commuters faced delays due to blocked roads, and officials have urged residents to remain indoors wherever possible.

Meanwhile, in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, ongoing rescue operations have been significantly hampered by incessant downpours. Search and relief teams have been unable to reach certain remote villages due to swollen rivers and blocked mountain passes. Disaster response forces are on high alert, but heavy rains have made helicopter sorties difficult, further slowing relief efforts.

The Dehradun administration has also declared a holiday for schools in the district after relentless rainfall made road conditions dangerous. In certain parts of the city, waterlogging and traffic snarls added to the woes of daily commuters.

One of the most impacted events has been the Kedarnath Yatra, which has been temporarily suspended for the safety of pilgrims. Authorities cited multiple landslides along the route and unstable weather conditions as primary reasons for the suspension. Pilgrims already on their way have been advised to halt at safer points until conditions improve.

Meteorological departments have predicted that the heavy rain spell will likely continue for the next two to three days, particularly in the Himalayan belt. Warnings have been issued to tourists and trekkers to avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude areas during this period. The weather office has also cautioned about the risk of cloudbursts in certain regions.

This year’s monsoon has been marked by intense regional variations. While some states in India face water scarcity due to deficient rainfall, others are grappling with floods and infrastructure damage. In the Himalayan region, fragile topography makes it particularly vulnerable to rainfall-induced disasters, often leading to long-term damage to roads, bridges, and livelihoods.

Authorities have urged residents to follow official advisories closely and refrain from crossing swollen rivers or venturing near landslide-prone areas. Disaster preparedness teams remain stationed in key districts, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has pre-positioned resources in anticipation of emergency situations.

While rains are a lifeline for agriculture and water replenishment, the extreme intensity seen in certain parts of North India this monsoon season once again highlights the need for better infrastructure resilience and early warning systems. Climate experts have warned that changing weather patterns are making extreme rainfall events more frequent, increasing the risks for communities living in flood-prone or mountainous areas.

As the situation develops, state governments and disaster management teams continue to monitor conditions and plan relief measures. With the Kedarnath Yatra on hold and critical rescue operations pending, the coming days will be crucial in determining how quickly life can return to normal in these affected regions.
