  • IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Telangana and Himachal Pradesh with orange alert in place for the next few days.

  • Telangana likely to see intense showers, possible local flooding; citizens advised to avoid travel in low-lying areas.

  • Monsoon activity intensifies across India, with multiple states expected to see significant rainfall this week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, signalling heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. The monsoon, which had shown a slightly delayed onset in certain regions, has now picked up pace and is expected to cause widespread rain across multiple states.

The IMD’s orange alert is the second-highest level of weather warning, urging people to prepare for possible disruption due to intense rain. According to officials, Telangana will see intense showers accompanied by thunder and lightning, raising the risk of local flooding in low-lying areas. The state administration has been instructed to monitor river levels and ensure that disaster response teams remain on standby.

Himachal Pradesh is also bracing for heavy rainfall, with potential landslides in hilly areas and disruption to road travel. Tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to remote mountainous regions during this period.

Meteorologists say that monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are converging over central and southern India, enhancing rainfall activity. This spell of intense rain is likely to continue for the next 72 hours, after which the weather pattern may ease in some parts but persist in others.

Precautionary measures advised by IMD include avoiding travel during peak downpour hours, staying away from swollen rivers and streams, and securing loose items at home that could be damaged by strong winds. Farmers have also been advised to plan their agricultural activities accordingly, especially in areas prone to waterlogging.

The monsoon season in India, typically from June to September, is crucial for agriculture, as it accounts for nearly 70% of the annual rainfall in most regions. However, excessive rains can lead to floods, crop damage, and infrastructure disruptions.

This latest forecast underscores the need for citizens to stay informed about real-time weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities. Emergency helplines have been activated in affected districts, and arrangements for temporary shelters are being made in flood-prone zones.

With the current weather system in place, urban centres like Hyderabad are expected to face traffic snarls and waterlogging, while rural areas could see damage to kutcha roads and small bridges. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has already initiated desilting of major drains and warned residents in low-lying colonies to remain alert.

As the week progresses, weather patterns will be closely monitored, with further updates expected from the IMD. For now, the message is clear — be prepared, stay cautious, and avoid unnecessary risks during this spell of heavy monsoon rains.
