Himachal Pradesh is experiencing severe snowfall and torrential rains, leading to blocked roads, power disruptions, and school closures across the state. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, 583 roads, including 5 national highways, are blocked, 2263 distribution transformers (DTRs) are down, impacting power supply, and 279 water supply schemes have been affected.

The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued an alert for heavy snowfall and rain in several districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi. As snowfall continues, authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures.

Road Blockages and Landslides

The snowfall has triggered landslides and road blockages, significantly impacting transportation and connectivity. Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, Torul S Ravish, stated that many link roads, including major routes along the left bank, are completely blocked due to continuous rainfall and snowfall over the past 15-16 hours.

Several areas in Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Shimla districts have been cut off from the rest of the state, causing difficulties for residents and emergency services.

Threat of Avalanches in Higher Altitudes

The administration has issued a high alert for avalanches in tribal areas and regions above 2,300 meters altitude. Officials have urged people to avoid outdoor movement in these locations and take necessary precautions.

With the weather expected to remain severe, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising travelers to avoid venturing into high-altitude regions.

CM’s Warning and Precautionary Measures

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has advised residents to stay away from rivers and streams as several districts, especially Kullu, face heavy flooding and snowfall.

"I have been monitoring the situation since morning. We urge all people to remain cautious and follow the guidelines issued by the administration. Stay away from rivers and streams," Sukhu stated.

He further added that discussions with Deputy Commissioners from Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti have led to measures such as opening the gates of one of the power project dams to regulate water flow.

Educational Institutions Closed, But CBSE Exams Unaffected

Due to the severe weather conditions, all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, in Kullu, Chamba, and Manali have been ordered to remain closed.

However, CBSE Board examinations will continue as scheduled, ensuring that students taking important academic tests are not affected.

Snowfall Statistics and Weather Update

Himachal Pradesh has seen record-breaking snowfall in multiple locations. As of 8:30 AM, the highest snowfall levels recorded are:

  • Kothi – 120 cm
  • Khadrala – 115 cm
  • Keylong – 75 cm
  • Kalpa – 46 cm
  • Kukumseri – 38.8 cm
  • Sangla – 23.5 cm
  • Nichar and Moorang – 15 cm each

Impact on Power and Water Supply

The extreme weather conditions have disrupted power and water supply across multiple districts. 2263 distribution transformers (DTRs) are down, leading to widespread power outages. In addition, 279 water supply schemes have been affected, limiting access to clean water in many regions.

Authorities are working round the clock to restore essential services, but with ongoing snowfall and road blockages, progress remains slow.

Precautionary Guidelines for Residents

With adverse weather conditions expected to persist, residents and travelers in Himachal Pradesh are advised to:

  • Avoid non-essential travel in affected districts.
  • Stay indoors and refrain from venturing into high-risk areas.
  • Keep emergency supplies of food, water, and warm clothing readily available.
  • Follow updates from local authorities regarding road conditions and avalanche warnings.
  • Stay away from rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones.

Final Thoughts

Himachal Pradesh is currently battling one of the harshest snowfall and rain spells of 2025, leading to widespread road blockages, power disruptions, and educational closures. While the government and local authorities continue to take action, the public is advised to exercise extreme caution and follow safety advisories.

With the threat of avalanches, landslides, and further snowfall, travelers and residents must stay vigilant and prioritize safety over convenience. As the situation develops, authorities will work on restoring essential services and reopening blocked roads.
