Heavy rainfall since Wednesday has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, triggering cloudbursts and flash floods that have caused widespread damage and disrupted daily life. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 325 roads, including two National Highways — NH-305 (Aut-Sainj) and NH-505 (Khab to Gramphoo) — are closed due to landslides, flooding, and debris flow.

Impact Across Districts

• Mandi district has reported the highest disruption with 179 roads blocked, while Kullu district has 71 road closures.

• In Shimla district, heavy rain led to the collapse of a bus stand, damaging nearby shops, and washing away two bridges, cutting off the Koot and Kyav panchayats.

• In Lahaul and Spiti, cloudbursts in the Mayad Valley caused the collapse of two more bridges in Karpat, Changut, and Udgos Nala, forcing residents to evacuate to safer locations.

Local resident Ranjit Lahauli reported the destruction of nearly ten bighas of farmland, while a police post in Ganvi Ravine was swept away. Relief operations are ongoing in the affected areas.

Weather Alerts and IMD Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi districts for Thursday, warning of likely heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for four to six districts from Friday to Sunday, urging residents to remain vigilant.

Disruptions to Daily Life
The heavy rain has caused significant inconvenience to school students and office goers. In Shimla, a large tree fell on the Circular Road near Tolland early Wednesday, blocking traffic and halting buses until clearance crews removed it.

Ongoing Challenges
With major roads and bridges damaged, restoring connectivity remains the immediate priority for authorities. Officials have warned of the possibility of further landslides and flash floods if the rain continues. Local administrations are working to set up temporary shelters and provide essential supplies to stranded residents.

The combination of infrastructure damage, transportation disruption, and ongoing weather alerts paints a serious picture for Himachal Pradesh in the coming days.
