Himachal Pradesh is set to experience a six-day wet spell, with the Himachal Pradesh Meteorological Department forecasting a series of weather events. As the state braces for significant weather changes, the MeT station has issued orange and yellow warnings for a combination of rain, snow, thunderstorms, and lightning over the coming days.

Weather Warnings and Alerts

  • Orange Warning: For heavy to very heavy rain or snowfall coupled with thunderstorms and lightning in districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu on February 27 and 28. Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant as conditions could turn severe.
  • Yellow Warning: This warning covers all 12 districts on February 28, expecting light to moderate rain or snow, along with heavy spells of rain and snowfall in some areas. A yellow warning will also affect 10 districts on February 27, excluding Solan and Kinnaur.

This wet spell is likely to bring substantial disruptions, particularly in higher altitude areas prone to snowfall and landslides. Travelers planning to visit mountainous regions are strongly advised to exercise caution.

Impact and Conditions

The weather in Himachal Pradesh has remained largely dry in the past 24 hours. However, temperatures have fluctuated slightly, with Kukumseri recording the coldest temperatures in the state at minus 11.2°C. Other cold regions include Keylong at minus 9.7°C and Tabo at minus 7.5°C. On the other hand, Una recorded the highest temperature, reaching 28°C, with several other places experiencing temperatures above 25°C.

Earthquake in Mandi

In addition to the expected weather disruptions, an earthquake of moderate intensity struck Mandi district on February 24, 2025, at 8:42 AM. The tremors were felt in parts of the district, but fortunately, no significant damage or loss of life was reported. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 3.7, had its epicenter in the Sundernagar area near Kiargi, with a depth of 7 km. Since Mandi falls under seismic zone 5, a high-risk area for earthquakes, authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Conclusion

With the weather forecast predicting significant rainfall and snowfall in the coming days, Himachal Pradesh residents and travelers must be prepared for challenging conditions, particularly in the hilly regions. The government and authorities have issued warnings to ensure public safety, urging caution due to the possibility of landslides and snow-related hazards.
