Tsui Wah Returns to Central with a Modern Twist
Hong Kong’s beloved Tsui Wah has made its grand return to Central, reviving the nostalgic flavors of cha chaan teng dining with a sleek, updated look. The new location at Silver Fortune Plaza on Wellington Street marks the comeback of one of the city's most iconic late-night eateries—but with a glitzier vibe than before.
For more than two decades, the old 24-hour Tsui Wah on Wellington Street was a legendary late-night spot, especially for those spilling out of Lan Kwai Fong’s bars in the early hours. Serving up hot bowls of soup noodles, fried rice, and buttery egg sandwiches, it was the go-to place for post-drinking comfort food. The closure in 2020, due to pandemic restrictions and protests, felt like the end of an era for Hong Kong’s nightlife.
Now, Tsui Wah is back, but with a more polished, upmarket feel. So how does it compare to the past?
A New Look, But Still Tsui Wah
Walking into the new Tsui Wah, you’ll notice it’s brighter, neater, and more refined. While it keeps the signature overhead lighting and no-frills seating, there are modern design touches that reference Hong Kong’s history:
-
Curved wooden benches inspired by classic Hong Kong tram seats.
-
Shiny red-painted air-conditioning ducts, adding a nostalgic touch.
-
Pink neon-framed windows, giving the space a retro-futuristic ambiance.
While the chaotic, buzzing late-night energy of the past is missing, the new version still delivers Hong Kong comfort food in a stylish setting.
What’s on the Menu?
We visited Tsui Wah for dinner after a few beers—for authenticity’s sake—and ordered some of the restaurant’s signature dishes:
✅ Barbecued Pork Belly with Scrambled Egg on Rice (HK$122) – Tender, sweet pork belly with a tangy side sauce. The eggs were creamy and almost runny, just right.
✅ Shredded Pork and Mushroom with Fried Noodles (HK$98) – A great balance of crispy and soft textures, enhanced with a dash of red vinegar.
✅ Chicken Wings in Supreme Sauce (HK$78) – Juicy, plump wings coated in a sweet soy glaze.
Looking around, the deep-fried prawns with kung pao peppercorn oil on fried noodles (HK$128) seemed to be a crowd favorite, and we’d definitely give them a try next time.
With two fresh lime sodas, our total bill came to HK$366, which is reasonable for an elevated cha chaan teng experience.
What’s the Vibe?
-
Ambiance: Polished but casual, with a more subdued energy than the old location.
-
Crowd: A mix of locals and expats, though it was only half full at 7:30 p.m. on a Wednesday.
-
Late-night potential: A solid spot for a meal after a night out at the Rugby Sevens or a regular dinner.
Should You Visit?

Final Verdict: Tsui Wah Evolves, But Nostalgia Remains
Tsui Wah’s return to Central is a welcome revival, even if it’s not exactly the same as before. The food is still solid, the atmosphere is cleaner and more polished, and it’s a great place for late-night Hong Kong comfort food.
It may not be the chaotic, packed, post-party spot of the past—but change is part of Hong Kong’s DNA.
