  1. Delhi to introduce hot air balloon rides at four key locations over the next two months.

  2. The initiative aims to promote ecotourism and provide a fresh aerial perspective of Delhi’s green zones.

  3. Sites include Yamuna Sports Complex, Baansera Park, Commonwealth Complex, and Asita zone.

In a vibrant initiative aimed at revitalising tourism and enhancing eco-friendly travel options, Delhi is set to introduce hot air balloon rides across four major green zones in the national capital within the next two months. This ambitious plan is expected to boost ecotourism and offer unique aerial views of Delhi’s natural and developed landscapes, giving both residents and tourists a fresh way to engage with the city.

The initiative, spearheaded by Delhi’s Tourism and Environment Departments, will be rolled out at the Yamuna Sports Complex, Commonwealth Games Sports Complex, Asita Biodiversity Park, and Baansera Park, all of which are key ecological and recreational hotspots.

According to officials, this is the first time structured hot air balloon rides are being introduced in Delhi as part of a sustainable tourism development strategy that aims to combine recreation, conservation, and urban green awareness.

Hot Air Ballooning Comes to Delhi: A First-of-its-Kind Move

Hot air ballooning has traditionally been associated with destinations like Jaipur, Lonavala, or the Rann of Kutch. But with this upcoming project, Delhi is poised to become a new hub for low-impact aerial tourism, offering scenic rides over riverbanks, biodiversity parks, and redeveloped recreational zones.

The project will involve licensed operators, trained pilots, and comprehensive safety measures to ensure that the rides are not only enjoyable but also compliant with aviation and environmental norms.

The Delhi government has already held consultations with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other airspace authorities to ensure all permissions are in place. Balloon rides are expected to operate in early mornings and late afternoons, to avoid thermal turbulence and ensure smooth flying conditions.

Key Locations Selected for Launch

The hot air balloon services will be made available at the following four carefully selected locations:

  1. Yamuna Sports Complex (East Delhi) – Known for its large open grounds, this site offers sufficient space for balloon take-offs and landings. It also provides a picturesque aerial view of nearby green belts and cityscape.

  2. Commonwealth Games Sports Complex (CWG Complex) – A legacy site from the 2010 Games, this area is surrounded by parks and tree cover, offering a balanced mix of nature and urban infrastructure.

  3. Asita Biodiversity Park (near Yamuna floodplains) – This location is known for its diverse flora and fauna, making it perfect for those interested in nature-focused rides. The balloon will offer views of wetlands, migratory birds, and restored ecosystems.

  4. Baansera Park (Yamuna riverfront) – Baansera, touted as India’s first bamboo theme park, provides a visually unique terrain, especially when seen from above. The rides here will give passengers a panoramic look at Delhi’s green transformation along the Yamuna banks.

Each of these sites has been chosen for its environmental value, accessibility, open space availability, and potential to enhance ecotourism without disturbing natural habitats.

Push for Ecotourism and Sustainable Travel

The move comes as part of a larger policy push to encourage sustainable and low-impact tourism in Delhi, especially after the pandemic-induced disruptions forced a rethink in how travel is structured in urban areas.

The Delhi government has been actively promoting ‘green zones’ and rejuvenated riverfront spaces under its climate action goals and urban biodiversity plans. The hot air balloon rides are envisioned not just as tourist attractions but as awareness tools that encourage citizens to value and protect Delhi’s green lungs.

An official from the Delhi Tourism Department said, “This is not just about thrill or fun. It is about showing people how beautiful and fragile our natural spaces are. A balloon ride over a wetland or park has the power to create lifelong ecological consciousness.”

Ticketing, Pricing, and Timings

The rides are expected to launch officially by mid to late September, depending on final regulatory clearances and weather conditions. Ticket pricing is yet to be announced but is expected to range between ₹1500 to ₹3000 per person, depending on the location and duration.

Each ride will last about 20 to 30 minutes, with 4 to 8 passengers per balloon, based on weight and safety guidelines. Morning rides will start just after sunrise, and evening rides before sunset—the ideal times for ballooning globally.

Online booking platforms, as well as offline ticketing counters, will be set up by Delhi Tourism, along with private partners selected through a transparent bidding process.

Safety Measures and Environmental Guidelines

Ballooning is generally considered one of the safest forms of aviation, but the Delhi administration is not taking any chances. The selected vendors will have to comply with:

  • DGCA-approved pilot licences

  • Regular airworthiness checks on balloon equipment

  • Strict take-off and landing protocols

  • Eco-sensitivity norms to avoid disturbing nearby bird habitats and ecosystems

Additionally, the balloon sites will have emergency medical response teams, fire safety equipment, and ground crew trained in aerial tourism operations.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Department of Environment will conduct environmental audits regularly to ensure the activity remains sustainable.

Public Response and Expected Benefits

The announcement has been met with excitement on social media and travel forums. Many Delhites have expressed their eagerness to experience the city from a bird’s-eye view, particularly in green zones that are often inaccessible from ground level.

Tourism experts believe the balloon rides will:

  • Enhance Delhi’s image as an urban eco-tourism destination

  • Attract both domestic and foreign tourists

  • Provide economic opportunities for local communities and service providers

  • Increase public engagement with environmental conservation efforts

A Delhi-based travel blogger, Sneha Arora, commented, “Delhi needed something like this. The balloon rides will give people a new reason to explore beyond malls and monuments.”

Looking Ahead: A Model for Other Cities

If successful, Delhi’s hot air balloon initiative could serve as a model for other Indian cities looking to integrate adventure, tourism, and sustainability. With rising interest in aerial experiences and ecotourism, cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata may also explore similar projects.

Furthermore, the initiative aligns well with the Centre’s ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ campaign, aimed at encouraging Indians to travel locally and discover hidden gems within the country.

Officials have hinted at the possibility of night glow events, where stationary balloons are lit up during festivals or cultural evenings, adding a visual spectacle without requiring take-off.

Conclusion: Soaring Above the City, Gently and Greenly

Delhi’s upcoming hot air balloon rides represent more than just a new tourist attraction—they are a statement of intent. A commitment to greener tourism, sustainable experiences, and re-imagining how a busy metropolis can reconnect with nature.

From floating silently over wetlands to catching the golden hue of the Yamuna at sunrise, these rides promise not just sights, but a shift in perspective.

In a city often known for its chaos, this may well be the calm in the sky that Delhiites—and tourists—have been waiting for
