What's covered under the Article

  • IMD predicts thunderstorms, lightning, and duststorms across Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and other northern states on April 19 and 20.

  • Weather disturbance to cause isolated hailstorms in Himachal Pradesh, J&K, and Uttarakhand with gradual cooling over next three days.

  • Storm-related incidents in Delhi and Meerut result in six deaths; rain and gusty winds also bring respite from rising temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for thunderstorms and rain over Delhi-NCR and other regions of north India today, bringing much-needed relief from the heat. Following a duststorm and gusty winds, the weather in parts of Delhi and surrounding areas saw a dip in temperatures, offering some respite from the scorching heat.

Thunderstorms and Rain Across North India

The IMD has predicted isolated thunderstorms and rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and the Northeast today, April 19, 2025. Additionally, parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience duststorms with cloudy skies. The rain will be light, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Winds in the evening are likely to reach 40-50 km/h, with gusts up to 60 km/h, potentially creating hazardous conditions.

Weather Conditions for April 19-20

The forecast for April 19 and April 20 includes thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand regions are expected to witness isolated hailstorms along with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. The temperature in northwest India is expected to see a gradual fall of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius due to the influence of a Western Disturbance and an upper cyclonic circulation over Punjab and central parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Impact of Adverse Weather

The intense weather conditions have led to tragic incidents. In Delhi, a multi-storey building in the Mustafabad area collapsed due to the sudden onset of a thunderstorm and rain, resulting in the loss of four lives. Ten people are feared trapped under the debris, and rescue operations are ongoing. Meanwhile, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, two family members were killed after their roof collapsed during a strong storm. Three others from the family have sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

Forecasted Weather in Detail

  • The maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR is expected to hover around 38°C, while the minimum temperature will be around 26°C. The thunderstorms and rain will help in reducing the overall temperature across the region.

  • The IMD also mentions that the weather conditions will be influenced by a Western Disturbance, which brings in moisture and cool air from the northwest, along with a cyclonic circulation over central Uttar Pradesh, contributing to the current spell of unstable weather.

This weather pattern, which could persist over the next few days, is expected to provide much-needed relief to the region, although the risk of adverse events like building collapses, flash floods, and traffic disruptions due to gusty winds and rain remains a concern.

Precautions for North India

As the stormy weather continues, residents of affected areas are advised to stay alert and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. Those in vulnerable structures or areas prone to flooding should take appropriate precautions, including securing windows and doors, and staying indoors during severe weather events. Drivers are urged to be cautious of slippery roads and reduced visibility during thunderstorms and rain.

This unpredictable weather underscores the importance of preparedness during transitional seasons, where such extreme weather events can occur suddenly, posing a threat to life and property.
