The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the current heatwave conditions gripping large parts of central and western India, as well as parts of North India, will ease starting from April 10, 2025. After a searing few days with temperatures soaring above 43°C in many places and reaching a peak of 46.4°C in Barmer, Rajasthan, residents of Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh can expect some relief in the coming days.

On April 8, a scorching heatwave swept across central and western India, with 27 IMD stations recording temperatures of 43°C or higher. The highest temperature recorded was in Barmer, Rajasthan, where the mercury touched 46.4°C. Other states affected included Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, which saw widespread heatwave to severe heatwave conditions.

In Delhi, extreme heat was also recorded, with the Safdarjung Observatory reporting 41°C, and Ayanagar recording 40.4°C. These temperatures marked the continuation of heatwave conditions in the national capital.

IMD Forecast: Relief on the Horizon

The IMD has predicted a significant shift in weather patterns, bringing some relief to the affected areas. Starting April 10, northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, will experience a drop in temperatures, providing relief from the intense heat. The IMD expects Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to experience a similar reprieve starting April 11.

The forecast for Delhi-NCR indicates partly cloudy skies and thunderstorms from April 10 onwards, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h. Temperatures in the capital are expected to slightly drop, ranging between 38°C to 40°C, with minimums between 22°C to 24°C. The city will also experience cooler southeasterly winds during the morning, which will increase during the evening.

Rainfall Predictions Across Various States

In addition to the heatwave relief, the IMD has forecasted scattered rainfall over several northern and western states. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall from April 9 to 11, with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h. This much-needed rainfall will help alleviate the ongoing heat and bring some relief to the affected regions.

The IMD also predicts isolated rainfall over the plains of northwest India on April 10. Isolated hailstorms are also expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir on April 9, which could further help in cooling down the region.

Heatwave’s Toll and Ongoing Efforts

The recent heatwave conditions have caused widespread discomfort and health issues, with many areas experiencing unprecedented temperatures for this time of year. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, advising residents to remain cautious during the peak hours of heat and stay hydrated.

As the weather begins to change, the relief from the heatwave will be a welcome respite for residents across the affected states. Authorities have been urged to ensure preparedness in handling the extreme weather, particularly in terms of managing the health impacts of the heatwave and coordinating the relief efforts for those affected by the ongoing heat.

Conclusion

The weather in North India and surrounding regions has been an intense topic of concern as the IMD heatwave forecast predicts an easing of the current scorching conditions from April 10 onward. While relief is expected soon, scattered rains and thunderstorms will provide much-needed respite, especially to Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. As the mercury levels drop and rain showers provide some respite, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared for any sudden weather changes.
