What's covered under the Article:
-
IMD forecasts severe heatwave in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh till April 19 with hot nights expected in West India.
-
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are predicted in Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala due to approaching weather systems.
-
Delhi and surrounding regions may receive rainfall between April 18 and 20 due to a strong Western Disturbance impacting the Western Himalayan Region.
As summer intensifies across the Indian subcontinent, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather advisory warning about severe heatwave conditions and heavy rainfall events in various parts of the country. The alerts are effective for the period extending till April 20, 2025, and include multiple states experiencing extreme weather patterns simultaneously.
Severe Heatwave Warning for Western and Central India
According to the official IMD release, West Rajasthan will be at the epicentre of severe heatwave conditions, particularly between April 16 to 18, with isolated to widespread instances expected until April 19.
Similarly, East Rajasthan is likely to witness heatwave conditions between April 15 and 19, and Gujarat will face a heatwave from April 15 to 17.
The heatwave isn’t confined to Rajasthan and Gujarat. The forecast also includes:
-
Punjab, Haryana, and West Madhya Pradesh to experience heatwave at isolated locations from April 16 to 18.
-
Hot and humid weather conditions will persist in Kerala and Mahe on April 14 and 15, and in Gujarat from April 15 to 17.
In addition to daytime temperatures, warm night conditions are expected to exacerbate discomfort in West Rajasthan (April 16–18) and East Rajasthan (April 17–18).
The IMD has strongly urged people residing in these regions to stay indoors during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with medical conditions.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Eastern and Southern India
While the north and west battle soaring temperatures, eastern and southern India are bracing for widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity.
Due to the influence of active weather systems, states like:
-
Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand are set to witness light to moderate rainfall from April 14 to 15, which will be accompanied by lightning, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph).
In the southern peninsula, the following regions will also experience unstable weather:
-
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal,
-
Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam,
-
Rayalaseema,
-
Telangana,
-
Interior Karnataka
Rainfall in these areas is expected to be scattered to fairly widespread over the next five days, often with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Kerala and Mahe may see gusty winds up to 50 kmph alongside scattered rainfall over the next three days.
These weather patterns are likely the result of localized convection and the influence of an approaching Western Disturbance, which is intensifying day by day.
Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh Likely to See Rainfall from April 18–20
The IMD has forecast that Delhi, along with parts of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, will likely receive rainfall and thunderstorms between April 18 and 20, under the influence of a major Western Disturbance.
This intense Western Disturbance is projected to affect the Western Himalayan Region from April 16 to 20, with peak intensity on April 18 and 19.
This system will bring:
-
Heavy rainfall and hailstorms to Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on April 18
-
Similar hailstorm activity in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 18 and 19
As the system moves eastward, rain and thunderstorms will spill over to the adjoining plains, including Delhi NCR, potentially bringing relief from the current warm spell but increasing risk of urban flooding and traffic disruptions.
IMD's Advisory to Residents
In light of the multiple weather systems at play, the IMD has advised people to take the following precautions:
-
Stay indoors during peak heat hours (12 PM – 4 PM), especially in states under heatwave alerts.
-
Keep hydrated, and consume water even when not thirsty to prevent heatstroke.
-
Check on elderly family members, children, and pets regularly during hot and humid conditions.
-
During rainfall, stay away from open fields, trees, or electrical poles during thunderstorms.
-
Secure loose outdoor items and ensure drainage systems are clear to handle potential downpours in urban areas.
The changing weather also serves as a reminder of the climatic extremes becoming more frequent due to global climate change. Citizens are urged to stay informed by following daily IMD updates on their official website and social media channels.
Conclusion
With India entering a volatile phase of summer, marked by record-breaking temperatures in the west and unseasonal rainfall in the east and south, awareness and preparedness are key. The IMD’s multi-layered weather alerts act as a crucial warning mechanism for government agencies, disaster response teams, and the general public.
As April progresses, it's vital for people across affected states to stay weather aware, plan travel accordingly, and take protective measures to ensure their health and safety.
