IMD Weather Alert: Red Alert in Karnataka, Rain and Thunderstorms Ahead has become one of the most important weather developments across the country as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall activity in multiple regions while simultaneously warning of continuing heatwave conditions in several northern and central states. The latest IMD weather forecast indicates that monsoon-related rainfall activity is likely to intensify across large parts of India from June 9 onwards. While many regions are expected to receive welcome relief from rising temperatures through rainfall and thunderstorms, some areas may experience severe weather conditions requiring caution and preparedness. Among the most significant announcements made by the weather department is the issuance of an IMD red alert Karnataka warning for coastal districts. The alert highlights the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions in parts of the state over the coming days. The coastal Karnataka rainfall warning specifically covers the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, where weather conditions are expected to become particularly intense. According to the forecast, these districts could experience extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. The issuance of a red alert represents the highest level of weather warning and is generally reserved for situations where severe weather conditions may pose risks to life, property and infrastructure. Residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and closely follow updates issued by local authorities and weather agencies. The Karnataka weather alert also emphasises the possibility of waterlogging, disruption to transportation and damage to vulnerable structures due to strong winds and intense rainfall. The monsoon has already advanced into several parts of southern India, bringing increased moisture and favourable conditions for widespread precipitation. The latest forecast suggests that this trend is likely to continue over the coming days. In addition to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, Uttara Kannada district is also expected to receive significant rainfall. Authorities are monitoring conditions closely as the monsoon strengthens its presence across the western coastline. One of the major concerns associated with the weather system is the expected deterioration in sea conditions. Rough seas are likely along portions of the Arabian Sea coastline, prompting authorities to issue advisories for fishing communities. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea during the warning period. Such advisories are crucial because strong winds and turbulent sea conditions can significantly increase risks for fishing vessels and small boats. The heavy rainfall warning extends beyond Karnataka and encompasses a large part of the country. According to the India rainfall forecast June 2026, widespread rainfall activity is expected across several northeastern states. States including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to witness fairly widespread to widespread rainfall between June 9 and June 14. The northeastern region often experiences significant monsoon activity due to its geographical location and proximity to moisture-laden weather systems. The current forecast suggests that rainfall intensity could remain elevated throughout the week. Particularly concerning is the prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Assam and Meghalaya from June 9 to June 14. Similar conditions are expected in Arunachal Pradesh, where persistent rainfall may affect daily activities and transportation networks. Meanwhile, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also expected to experience heavy rainfall during the forecast period. Residents in these regions have been advised to remain prepared for possible localised flooding and travel disruptions. In eastern India, weather conditions are also expected to become increasingly active. Bihar is forecast to receive heavy rainfall between June 10 and June 12, while Odisha may experience heavy precipitation on June 11 and June 12. The forecast additionally highlights the likelihood of significant rainfall across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. These areas are expected to receive heavy rainfall from June 10 to June 13, with very heavy rainfall possible on June 9. The monsoon news India update also indicates favourable conditions for rainfall across southern states. Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive heavy rainfall between June 9 and June 12 as monsoon activity remains active in the region. Parts of Karnataka beyond the coastal belt are also expected to witness substantial rainfall. North Interior Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall on June 12 and June 13, while South Interior Karnataka is likely to experience similar conditions from June 11 to June 14. The weather department has further indicated that Telangana may witness widespread rainfall between June 9 and June 11, with heavy rainfall expected during June 9 and June 10. While rainfall activity dominates much of the forecast, the Delhi thunderstorm alert and warnings for surrounding northern states have also attracted significant attention. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across large parts of northern India during the coming days. States likely to be affected include Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh weather update suggests that thunderstorms and gusty winds could impact multiple districts between June 10 and June 14. Similar conditions are expected across Haryana and Delhi during the same period. The Haryana rain forecast indicates that residents should prepare for intermittent rainfall, thunderstorm activity and strong winds. Such weather events can occasionally lead to disruptions in traffic movement, power supply interruptions and localised damage to infrastructure. The forecast also extends to eastern and central regions, where states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal may experience thunderstorms and lightning activity during the week. Weather experts note that thunderstorms during the monsoon transition period can sometimes be intense, producing strong winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning. Another important factor influencing weather conditions is the presence of a western disturbance over northwest India. Such systems frequently affect weather patterns in northern parts of the country and can contribute to rainfall activity and temperature fluctuations. The western disturbance is expected to bring scattered rainfall to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir through June 14. In addition to rainfall, hailstorm activity is also forecast in these hill states on June 11 and June 12. Interestingly, isolated hailstorm activity is also possible in parts of Delhi and Haryana on June 12. While hailstorms are generally localised events, they can cause damage to crops, vehicles and property. The weather office has additionally forecast duststorm activity in western Rajasthan on June 11 and June 12. Duststorms are common in arid regions during periods of atmospheric instability and can reduce visibility significantly. Strong winds represent another notable feature of the forecast. The IMD expects wind speeds of 50 to 70 kilometres per hour in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during June 11 and June 12. Similar wind conditions could affect Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal between June 10 and June 12. Such winds can occasionally uproot trees, damage temporary structures and disrupt transportation services. Despite the increased rainfall activity, the weather department has warned that heatwave and rain forecast India conditions will continue simultaneously in some regions. Isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha may continue to experience heatwave conditions through June 10 and June 11. Parts of East Madhya Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh are also expected to witness heatwave conditions during this period. This coexistence of rainfall and heatwave conditions in different parts of the country highlights the diverse nature of India's weather patterns during the monsoon transition season. The IMD has further warned of hot and humid weather conditions in Odisha through June 11. Similar conditions are expected over Konkan and Goa, as well as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through June 9. Temperature trends are also expected to change over the coming days. According to the weather department, maximum temperatures across northwest India may rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius until June 11 before falling by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius thereafter. Central India could witness a temperature increase of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius before a subsequent decline. Maharashtra is expected to experience a modest drop in temperatures of around 2 degrees Celsius. For most other parts of India, no major changes in temperature are expected through June 14. Overall, the latest IMD weather forecast presents a picture of active monsoon conditions across large sections of the country. The IMD red alert Karnataka warning remains the most serious advisory, particularly for residents of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and nearby coastal areas. At the same time, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds and continued heatwave conditions in some regions underline the need for vigilance and preparedness. As monsoon activity expands further across India, weather updates from the IMD will remain crucial for citizens, farmers, fishermen and local administrations alike.
