The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its weather forecast for January 2025, revealing that most parts of India will experience above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures during the month, except in some regions in the eastern, northwest, and west-central areas of the country. According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, minimum temperatures are expected to be higher than usual in most places across the country.
The maximum temperatures are also predicted to be above normal for most parts of India, except for regions in northwest, central, eastern India, and parts of the southern peninsula. However, the northern and western parts of central India are expected to experience more cold wave days than usual during January.
The rainfall forecast for North India during the period of January to March 2025 indicates that the rainfall will be below normal. The IMD expects rainfall to be less than 86% of the long-period average (LPA) for this period. For reference, the LPA for rainfall in North India during these months, based on data from 1971-2020, is around 184.3 mm.
The IMD's weather predictions also point out that the Rabi crops grown in northern and northwestern states such as Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, which include wheat, peas, gram, and barley, may be affected by the temperature fluctuations during this period. These crops are typically grown during the winter months (October to December) and harvested in summer (April to June).
This weather pattern marks a shift for January 2025 and could influence the agricultural and economic conditions in the affected regions. For further updates on weather conditions and their impact on agriculture and daily life, stay tuned to our weather updates.
