  • Only 8–10% of creators effectively monetize today, yet direct revenue from the sector is expected to grow 5x from the current ₹2.11 lakh crore.

  • WAVES 2025 showcases India's evolving digital content space with trends in AI, live commerce, AVGC, and influencer-led marketing strategies.

India's creator economy is undergoing a major transformation, and a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), titled "From Content to Commerce: Mapping India’s Creator Economy," underscores its rapidly expanding influence. The report, set to be unveiled at WAVES 2025 in Mumbai, offers valuable insights into how the creator economy is not only reshaping digital content but also becoming a significant driver of consumer spend in India.

India’s Creator Economy Growth:

According to the report, over 2 to 2.5 million digital creators are currently contributing to a massive annual consumer spending of ₹ 29,60,300 crore (US$ 350 billion). This figure is projected to surge significantly, surpassing ₹ 84,58,000 crore (US$ 1 trillion) by 2030. This marks a major milestone, positioning India as a global leader in the creator economy.

However, despite this immense financial footprint, the report highlights that only 8–10% of digital creators are successfully monetizing their content. This presents an enormous opportunity for growth in content monetization, with significant potential for creators to capitalize on the growing demand for digital content.

Economic Impact and Direct Revenue:

The creator economy, valued at ₹ 1,69,160 - ₹ 2,11,450 crore (US$ 20-25 billion) in direct revenues, is expected to experience substantial growth in the coming years, with estimates predicting that these revenues could grow fivefold by 2030. This growth trajectory reflects the growing importance of digital creators in shaping consumer behavior and driving economic activity.

Shifting Demographics and Content Consumption:

The appeal of the creator economy is rapidly expanding beyond the traditional Gen Z and metro-based audiences. Content consumption is now reaching wider demographics and regional areas, further fueling the growth of digital creators. The rise of short-form videos, particularly in genres like comedy, fashion, and entertainment, is a major driver of this transformation. These formats are dominating the digital space, creating new opportunities for both creators and brands.

New Monetization Models:

Brands are adapting to this new landscape by increasing investments in creator-led campaigns, with a focus on agility and flexibility. The BCG report reveals that brand spending on creator marketing is expected to increase up to threefold in the coming years. In response, creators are exploring new monetization models like live commerce, subscriptions, and virtual gifting to generate revenue. This shift highlights the growing convergence between digital content, commerce, and consumer engagement.

WAVES 2025 and the Future of India’s Digital Media:

The WAVES 2025 event is set to be a key platform for discussing the future of digital media in India. Along with the unveiling of the BCG report, the event will feature discussions on critical sectors like AI, social media, and the AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics) sector. These conversations are crucial as India continues to solidify its position as a global hub for digital content creation and innovation.

In conclusion, the rapid rise of the creator economy in India is poised to revolutionize the digital landscape and consumer spending patterns over the next decade. As new monetization opportunities emerge and brands continue to adjust their marketing strategies, India's creator economy is set to become a defining force in the global digital economy.
