Key Points:

  1. Total foodgrain production for 2023-24 is estimated at 3288.52 LMT, slightly lower than the previous year but higher than the five-year average.
  2. Rice and wheat production increased compared to last year, reaching 1367.00 LMT and 1129.25 LMT, respectively.
  3. Soybean and rapeseed & mustard production also saw notable increases from last year.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the Third Advance Estimates of Major Agricultural Crops for the 2023-24 period. These estimates encompass the Kharif, Rabi, and summer seasons, incorporating data from various sources including the State Agricultural Statistics Authorities (SASAs), Remote Sensing, the Weekly Crop Weather Watch Group, and other relevant agencies. Factors such as climatic conditions, historical trends, price movements, and mandi arrivals were also taken into account.

Foodgrain Production Overview

The total foodgrain production for 2023-24 is estimated at 3288.52 LMT, which is slightly lower than the 2022-23 production figures but significantly higher by 211.00 LMT compared to the five-year average from 2018-19 to 2022-23, which stood at 3077.52 LMT.

Rice and Wheat Production

Rice production has seen an increase, reaching 1367.00 LMT compared to 1357.55 LMT in the previous year. Similarly, wheat production has risen to 1129.25 LMT, marking an increase of 23.71 LMT from last year's production.

Other Major Crops

The production of Shree Anna is estimated at 174.08 LMT, showing a slight increase from the previous year. The production of Nutri/Coarse Cereals stands at 547.34 LMT, up by 46.24 LMT compared to the five-year average.

Tur production is estimated at 33.85 LMT, slightly higher than last year’s figure of 33.12 LMT, while lentil production has increased to 17.54 LMT from 15.59 LMT in the previous year.

Oilseeds and Commercial Crops

Soybean production is estimated at 130.54 LMT and rapeseed & mustard production is at 131.61 LMT, which is a 5.18 LMT increase from last year. These figures reflect the overall positive trend in the production of these oilseeds.

Cotton and Sugarcane Production

Cotton production is estimated at 325.22 lakh bales (with each bale weighing 170 kg), and sugarcane production is projected at 4425.22 LMT.

Data Collection and Validation

The estimates for the Kharif crops are based on yield data obtained from Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs). For Rabi crops, the production estimates utilize data from the Digital General Crop Estimation Survey (DGCES) conducted across 16 states. The production of summer crops is based on the average yield of the last three years.

Conclusion

The Third Advance Estimates of Major Agricultural Crops for 2023-24 released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare indicate a mixed trend in India’s agricultural production. While there are slight increases in the production of key crops such as rice, wheat, and several oilseeds, overall foodgrain production is slightly lower than the previous year but remains significantly higher than the five-year average. This data underscores the resilience and potential growth of India’s agricultural sector despite various challenges.
