India is witnessing an unprecedented boom in air conditioner sales, driven by historic heatwaves and rising urbanization. The demand for cooling solutions has surged, with leading companies like Blue Star Ltd. and Voltas Ltd. experiencing substantial growth. As temperatures soar, even households in smaller cities and rural areas are embracing air conditioning, breaking past the previous market limitations.
Surging Demand Across Urban and Rural India
According to Blue Star Ltd. Managing Director B Thiagarajan, the company expects a 30% growth in sales this summer, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. This increase is attributed to growing consumer exposure to air conditioning in public spaces like hospitals, shopping malls, and restaurants. Similarly, Voltas Ltd., owned by Tata Group, projects continued strong demand, extending its sales reach into remote and rural parts of India.
India’s Growing AC Market: A Transformation Underway
Despite experiencing regular heatwaves, only 10% of Indian households currently own an air conditioner. This figure contrasts sharply with China’s 68% penetration and Thailand’s 38%, as per consultancy EY. However, this trend is rapidly changing. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that India’s air conditioning units will grow from 93 million in 2023 to 240 million by 2030.
Consumer Financing Fuels AC Adoption
A key factor driving this surge is the rise of consumer financing solutions. Nearly 40% of AC purchases last year were facilitated through credit and ‘buy now, pay later’ options, making air conditioning more accessible to a wider consumer base.
Additionally, India’s affluent consumers are shifting towards smart ACs, featuring Wi-Fi connectivity and voice-command functionality, indicating a growing preference for technology-driven cooling solutions.
Industry Leaders Witness Exceptional Growth
The Indian AC market has seen phenomenal stock performance, reflecting growing investor confidence. According to Nomura Holdings analysts Siddhartha Bera and Kapil Singh, Voltas’ volumes surged 35% between April 2024 and January 2025, outpacing the industry. This momentum has driven Voltas’ share price up by 30% in the past year, while Blue Star Ltd. has surged by over 70%.
Heatwaves Driving Sales: A Meteorological Perspective
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country is expected to experience above-normal heatwave days in the three months leading up to May 31. This follows February 2025, which was recorded as India’s second-warmest February in more than a century. The country typically experiences the most extreme heat before the monsoon season starts in June, further propelling the demand for air conditioning.
Conclusion: A Cooling Revolution in India
With urbanization accelerating, rising incomes, and climate change-induced heatwaves, the Indian AC market is poised for sustained long-term growth. Leading players like Blue Star and Voltas are capitalizing on this demand by expanding into rural and semi-urban areas, while consumer financing is making ACs more affordable.
