At the second Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation in New Delhi, Minister of Civil Aviation Mr. K Rammohan Naidu outlined India’s ambitious plans to transform the country into a global aviation hub. Emphasizing the importance of infrastructure, integration, and innovation, Naidu highlighted the strategic efforts underway to boost domestic aircraft manufacturing and position India as a key player in the global aviation sector.
Expanding Aviation Infrastructure and Fleet
India’s civil aviation sector is experiencing rapid growth, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally. Since 2014, the domestic fleet size has surged from 400 to approximately 800 aircraft. Passenger numbers have more than doubled from 67 million to 152 million in the same period. The number of operational airports has increased from 74 to 157, with ambitious plans to expand this to 350-400 airports by 2047. This expansion aims to accommodate the growing demand and support India’s rise as an aviation powerhouse.
Focus on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Services
Naidu noted that India is strategically positioned to offer cost-effective and high-quality Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services to both domestic and international airlines. The government is committed to enhancing indigenous production capabilities and launching aircraft manufacturing within the country, which will further strengthen India’s position in the global aviation market.
Promoting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
In alignment with global sustainability goals, India is actively promoting the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The country aims to blend 1% SAF with jet fuel by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030 for international flights. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint and advancing environmental sustainability.
Global Collaboration and Strategic Investments
With the Asia-Pacific region leading global aviation expansion, Naidu stressed the need for strategic investments and collaboration among regional stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth. The two-day conference, attended by around 250 representatives from 41 countries, provided a platform for discussing these critical issues and fostering international cooperation in the aviation sector.
India’s vision for its aviation industry highlights its strategic focus on growth, innovation, and sustainability. The country is well-positioned to become a central hub for global aviation, driven by its expanding infrastructure, manufacturing capabilities, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
