Key Points:

  1. Capacity Expansion: India's nuclear power generation capacity to grow by 70% to 13.08 GWe by 2029 with the addition of 7 new reactors.
  2. Technological Developments: Focus on indigenous technologies like Bharat Small Reactor and Bharat Small Modular Reactor 220 MW.
  3. Health and Economic Benefits: Emphasis on applications beyond energy, including radiopharmaceuticals, nuclear medicine, and agriculture.

India's nuclear energy sector is poised for significant growth, as announced by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh during a recent high-level meeting to review the 100-day Action Plan of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The minister highlighted plans to increase India's nuclear power generation capacity by 70%, from the current 7.48 GWe to 13.08 GWe by 2029, through the addition of 7 new reactors.

This strategic expansion aims to bolster energy security while promoting indigenous technological advancements. Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the development of Bharat Small Reactor (BSR) and Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR) 220 MW, utilizing light water-based reactors to enhance efficiency and safety. These initiatives underscore India's commitment to harnessing nuclear energy for sustainable development and energy independence.

The minister also highlighted BHAVINI's progress, a public sector undertaking, in completing the initial fuel loading of the Prototype Fast Breeder reactor, with plans to achieve criticality soon. This reactor represents a milestone in fast breeder technology, poised to produce more fuel than it consumes, thereby enhancing India's self-sufficiency in nuclear fuel production.

Beyond energy production, Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed the broader applications of nuclear technology in healthcare, including radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine, as well as in agriculture and food preservation. These applications are expected to contribute to economic growth and societal benefits, enhancing the quality of life through advancements in science and technology.

In conclusion, India's ambitious plans in nuclear energy underscore its strategic approach to achieving energy security and promoting economic growth. The integration of indigenous technologies and collaborative efforts with public sector units are pivotal in realizing these goals, positioning India as a leader in nuclear technology innovation and application.
