India is on the brink of a major leap in artificial intelligence (AI) development. The Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Railways, Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently announced that the country’s large language model (LLM) is expected to be ready within the next 10 months. This announcement is part of India’s broader efforts under the India Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission, which aims to build cutting-edge AI models that reflect the country's diverse cultural and linguistic landscape.

The India AI Compute Facility plays a crucial role in this initiative, providing the necessary infrastructure to support AI development. A total of 18,693 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been procured to aid in the creation of the Indian LLM, positioning the country’s infrastructure on par with global AI benchmarks like ChatGPT, which was trained using 25,000 GPUs. These GPUs will be instrumental in developing an AI system that is not only technologically advanced but also tailored to India's unique needs.

AI Infrastructure and Global Benchmarking

The shared computing facility that houses these GPUs has already begun operations, with around 10,000 GPUs currently in use. This facility will support startups, researchers, and developers, helping to create AI models that cater to India’s needs and challenges. Major GPU providers like Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, Yotta, and NextGen Data Centre are part of this initiative, making sure the infrastructure is robust and capable of handling the demands of cutting-edge AI development.

India's growing AI capabilities were further emphasized by Mr. Vaishnaw, who noted that the country now has 15,000 high-end GPUs, making it a major player in the global AI landscape. With these advancements, India is poised to produce a world-class AI model in a relatively short time frame. According to the Minister, this model will be ready within eight to ten months, with six AI startups currently working on the development of these models. The startups are expected to deliver their models within four to six months, contributing to the country's rapidly expanding AI ecosystem.
