- The commercial segment showed growth, while the consumer market saw a slight decline due to more organic demand and aggressive vendor discounting.
India's personal computer (PC) market witnessed a notable shipment of 4.49 million units in the third quarter of 2024, reflecting a modest year-on-year increase of 0.1%. This comes after a strong 7.1% growth in the previous quarter, where 3.39 million PCs were shipped. The latest shipment data suggests a mixed performance, with certain product categories performing better than others. The notebook and workstation segments showed positive growth, registering 2.8% and 2.4% growth, respectively. In contrast, desktop shipments experienced a decline of 8.1%, signaling a shift in consumer preferences.
Growth in Premium Notebooks
One of the key drivers of growth in Q3 2024 was the increasing demand for premium notebooks, especially those priced over US$ 1,000. These products saw a surge of 7.6% in sales, largely fueled by online festival sales that boosted demand. This indicates a shift toward higher-end devices, likely due to changing consumer preferences for better performance, design, and features.
Market Leaders and Shares
In terms of market leadership, HP Inc. continued to dominate the Indian PC market with a 29% market share, leading both the commercial and consumer segments. Following HP, Lenovo secured the second spot with a 17.3% share, while Dell and Acer each held 14.6% of the market. Asus rounded off the top five with 9.7% of the market share. These companies have been engaging in aggressive pricing strategies, particularly in the consumer segment, to compete for market share.
Consumer vs. Commercial Segments
Despite these efforts, the consumer PC segment saw a year-on-year decline of 2.9%. Experts attribute this decline to a more organic demand this year compared to previous periods, where large discounting strategies and promotions might have inflated sales. Conversely, the commercial segment showed more promise, growing by 4.4%. This growth was driven by the enterprise market, which saw a 9.6% increase as companies began refreshing their IT devices, signaling the beginning of a recovery phase in the commercial PC market.
The Upcoming IPOs in this week and coming weeks are Agarwal Toughened, Ganesh Infraworld, Suraksha Diagnostic, Property Share REIT, Rosmerta Digital, Avanse Financial and Nisus Finance.
The Current active IPO is Apex Ecotech, Abha Power and Steel, Rajputana Biodiesel, and Rajesh Power Services.
Outlook for 2025
Looking ahead, experts are optimistic about the growth prospects for the Indian PC market, particularly in the commercial sector. The enterprise market is expected to continue expanding as companies increasingly adopt newer IT devices to enhance productivity. Additionally, the consumer demand for PCs is anticipated to rise due to the growing popularity of gaming and content creation. The rise in demand for PCs with integrated AI features is also likely to contribute to the positive outlook.
In conclusion, while Q3 2024 saw slower growth in India’s PC market compared to earlier quarters, there is still optimism for the future. The commercial segment's recovery, coupled with a surge in demand for premium devices and emerging trends like gaming and AI, are expected to drive the market forward. PC demand in India is forecasted to improve further towards the end of 2024 and into 2025, making it an exciting time for both consumers and vendors alike.
