  • India’s wireless subscriber base reached 1,171.91 million in July 2025, led by urban growth, while rural subscriptions saw a decline of 2.12 million.

  • Reliance Jio continued its lead with 498.47 million users, followed by Airtel with 307.07 million and Vodafone Idea with 127.58 million.

  • Overall wireless tele-density rose to 82.75%, with urban tele-density improving to 125.74% while rural tele-density slipped to 58.57%.

India’s telecom sector witnessed steady growth in July 2025, as the country’s total wireless subscriber base reached 1,171.91 million, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This marked a modest increase from 1,170.88 million subscribers in June 2025, representing a 0.09% monthly rise.

The growth in subscriber additions was largely driven by urban markets, where subscriptions climbed by 3.16 million to 641.03 million. In contrast, rural markets registered a decline of 2.12 million, bringing their subscriber base down to 530.88 million. This shift pushed the share of urban wireless subscribers to 54.70%, while rural subscribers accounted for 45.30% of the total.

Tele-Density Trends

The overall wireless tele-density improved to 82.75% in July 2025, indicating deeper telecom penetration across India. The rise was supported by urban tele-density, which grew to 125.74%, reflecting strong demand in metropolitan and tier-1 cities. Meanwhile, rural tele-density fell to 58.57%, highlighting the widening urban-rural gap in telecom adoption.

When excluding Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), India’s mobile subscriptions rose marginally from 1,163.03 million in June to 1,163.51 million in July, reflecting a 0.04% growth. Urban mobile subscriptions increased by 2.88 million, whereas rural mobile subscriptions declined by 2.39 million. Consequently, urban mobile users now account for 54.66%, while rural users stand at 45.34%.

Despite this mixed growth, mobile tele-density slipped slightly to 82.16% in July 2025, reflecting the varying adoption patterns between urban and rural markets.

Operator-wise Market Share

Among telecom operators, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. retained its leadership position with 498.47 million subscribers, consolidating its dominance in both mobile and FWA services. Bharti Airtel Ltd. followed with 307.07 million subscribers, while Vodafone Idea Ltd. (Vi) reported 127.58 million subscribers.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), the state-run operator, maintained a subscriber base of 34.27 million, and Atria Convergence Technologies Ltd. stood at 2.34 million subscribers. Collectively, the top five broadband service providers controlled 98.48% of the market share in July 2025, reinforcing the industry’s highly consolidated structure.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP)

The month also recorded 15.41 million MNP requests, underscoring the increasing demand for network flexibility and competitive pricing. Mobile users continue to prioritize service quality, coverage, and data benefits, leading to significant customer churn across operators.

Broader Industry Outlook

India’s wireless growth trajectory highlights the telecom industry’s pivotal role in digital connectivity. The steady increase in urban subscribers indicates rising demand for high-speed mobile internet and 5G adoption, especially in metropolitan regions. However, the contraction in rural subscribers points to persistent infrastructure challenges, affordability concerns, and slower adoption of advanced services in non-urban areas.

With the rollout of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) gaining traction, India’s telecom ecosystem is expected to see higher subscriber additions in the coming months. Industry analysts project that urban adoption of 5G, coupled with government initiatives to expand rural connectivity, will help balance the disparities in subscription patterns.

Moreover, the consistent performance of Jio and Airtel reflects their aggressive investments in 5G networks, fiber broadband expansion, and digital ecosystem integration, while Vodafone Idea continues to face competitive and financial challenges.

Conclusion

The latest TRAI data for July 2025 reflects India’s evolving telecom landscape, where urban demand continues to fuel subscriber growth, while rural markets present challenges that require targeted policy support and infrastructure development. With 1,171.91 million wireless subscribers, India remains one of the largest telecom markets globally, and its future growth will be driven by 5G adoption, affordable data services, and improved rural connectivity.
