What's covered under the Article:

  1. India achieved a record 34.4 GW addition of solar and wind power capacity in the first nine months of 2025, a 71% increase over last year.

  2. Utility-scale solar grew 22.5 GW with rooftop solar rising 81% YoY, while wind energy capacity increased by 4.96 GW during the same period.

  3. Total renewable energy capacity reached 247.3 GW by September 2025, with further 11-12 GW expected in Q4 to reach 45-46 GW annual additions.

India has achieved a remarkable milestone in renewable energy growth in 2025, adding a record 34.4 GW of new solar and wind power capacity in the first nine months of the year. This represents a 71% increase compared to the same period in 2024, demonstrating the country’s accelerating shift towards clean energy and its commitment to sustainable development. According to Ms. Jyoti Gulia, Founder and CEO of JMK Research, solar power capacity increased by 68.9%, while wind energy installations grew by 88.8%, highlighting the strong momentum in both key renewable segments.

India’s overall renewable energy installed capacity has now reached 247.3 GW as of September 2025, with the energy mix consisting of 52% solar, 21% wind, 20% large hydro, 5% bio power, and 2% small hydro. The country’s utility-scale solar sector witnessed substantial growth, adding 22.5 GW in the nine-month period, reflecting a 70% year-on-year jump, with almost half of this capacity commissioned in the third quarter alone. The rooftop solar segment also saw impressive expansion, growing 81% YoY with 5.8 GW added, supported by Public Sector Banks sanctioning over 5.79 lakh loan applications worth Rs. 10,907 crore (US$ 1.31 billion) for rooftop projects. Additionally, off-grid and distributed solar capacity increased by 1.17 GW, up 13% from the previous year.

In the wind energy segment, India added 4.96 GW between January and September 2025, contributing significantly to the overall renewable capacity expansion. These developments indicate a consistent drive towards achieving India’s renewable energy targets and underscore the growing confidence of investors, policymakers, and financial institutions in supporting clean energy initiatives.

Looking ahead, experts project that India will continue this growth trajectory, with an additional 11-12 GW expected in the final quarter of 2025, potentially bringing the total solar and wind capacity additions to 45-46 GW by year-end, setting a new benchmark in the country’s energy transition journey. This surge in capacity also demonstrates India’s ability to mobilize financing, scale infrastructure, and deploy renewable projects rapidly, while maintaining a diverse mix of solar, wind, hydro, and bio power sources.

The record additions in 2025 not only surpass total renewable energy capacity additions in 2024 but also reinforce India’s position as a global leader in clean energy deployment. The combined growth in utility-scale and rooftop solar projects, along with increased wind capacity, highlights the balanced approach India is adopting to ensure energy security, sustainability, and economic growth.

India’s renewable energy sector continues to attract significant investment, create employment opportunities, and enhance grid resilience. The ongoing momentum in solar and wind installations is expected to support net-zero and climate goals, enabling India to meet its international commitments under the Paris Agreement. The robust performance in 2025 demonstrates that India’s clean energy transition is not only accelerating but also achieving scale, efficiency, and financial viability.

In conclusion, the record 34.4 GW renewable energy additions in the first nine months of 2025 underscore India’s unwavering commitment to green energy, innovation, and sustainable development. With the expected Q4 capacity additions, India is poised to achieve unprecedented growth in solar and wind energy, setting a strong example for other emerging economies and reinforcing its role as a global renewable energy leader.
