India is set to make a significant leap in the global spirits market with ambitious plans to boost exports of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The Indian government aims to achieve a notable target of US$ 952.9 million (Rs. 8,000 crore) in export revenue over the next few years. This move is part of a broader strategy under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which seeks to enhance the country’s position in international markets and leverage its growing reputation for high-quality beverage products.
Current Export Landscape
India currently holds the 40th position in global alcoholic beverage exports, reflecting substantial room for growth. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India's exports of alcoholic beverages exceeded US$ 262.1 million (Rs. 2,200 crore), demonstrating a solid base for future expansion. Key markets for Indian alcoholic beverages include the UAE, Singapore, Netherlands, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya, and Rwanda.
Strategic Goals and Initiatives
The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), part of the commerce ministry, is at the forefront of this initiative. APEDA's goal is to drive export growth by targeting a total export revenue of US$ 1 billion. This ambitious target underscores the significant untapped potential in the global market for Indian spirits.
As part of the strategy, APEDA will promote various initiatives to enhance the visibility and appeal of Indian beverages abroad. This includes supporting product innovation, improving quality standards, and facilitating market access to key international destinations. The ‘Make in India’ initiative will play a crucial role in boosting the country's image as a producer of premium beverages, aligning with global market trends and consumer preferences.
Launch of 'Godawan'
One notable development in this effort is the launch of ‘Godawan’, a single-malt whisky produced by Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd.). Set to debut in the United Kingdom, this high-quality whisky from Rajasthan represents a significant step in enhancing India’s reputation as a producer of premium spirits. Mr. Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India, highlighted that while single-malt whisky will enhance India's global reputation, the bulk of export volumes will come from more accessible products such as premium Indian whiskies and rums.
Market Potential and Regional Focus
Mr. Giri also identified the US, Africa, and Europe as regions with substantial potential for Indian spirits. These markets offer significant opportunities for growth, driven by increasing demand for high-quality and exotic beverages. By focusing on these regions, India aims to tap into new customer bases and expand its market share.

Additionally, Mr. Giri recommended that the government encourage states to incorporate export promotion into their excise policies. This would help create a more conducive environment for the growth of the spirits industry and support exporters in navigating regulatory challenges.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the promising outlook, the Indian spirits industry faces several challenges. These include navigating complex regulatory environments in different markets, ensuring consistent product quality, and managing logistics and distribution networks. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for achieving the export targets and sustaining growth in the international market.
The government’s push to promote Indian spirits aligns with broader economic goals, including enhancing trade relations and strengthening India’s position as a key player in the global beverage industry. By leveraging its rich heritage in beverage production and tapping into growing global demand, India is poised to make a significant impact in the international spirits market.
