In a significant humanitarian gesture, India and Bangladesh will repatriate 185 fishermen on January 5, 2025. This operation aims to ease the lives of fishing communities on both sides of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). 95 Indian fishermen and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen will be transferred by their respective coast guards, underscoring the growing bilateral ties between the two countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, the repatriation process is designed to address the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of the fishing communities. These communities frequently face challenges due to the unintentional crossing of the International Maritime Boundary Line, which can lead to arrests. The MEA further noted that many Indian fishermen have been detained by Bangladesh authorities for accidentally crossing into their waters, while a similar number have been held by India for crossing into Indian waters. This incident highlights the complex nature of maritime borders and the vulnerability of fishing communities.
The repatriation event will occur at sea on January 5, 2025, where 95 Indian fishermen will be handed over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen will be repatriated to India. Alongside the fishermen, the repatriation process also includes the exchange of seized fishing vessels. Two Bangladeshi fishing boats, which were confiscated by Indian authorities, will be returned to Bangladesh. In return, six Indian fishing boats, seized by Bangladesh, will be released.
The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the mutual release and repatriation process commenced on January 2, 2025. The Bangladesh Coast Guard will handle the logistics and management of the repatriation at sea, ensuring a smooth transition. The operation is expected to conclude by midday on January 6, when the Bangladeshi fishermen and their boats will arrive at Chattogram.
This operation is the result of extensive coordination between the relevant authorities of both countries, including the ministries of foreign affairs, home affairs, fisheries, shipping, and other involved sectors. Key authorities such as the Bangladesh Coast Guard, Indian Coast Guards, Bangladesh Police, and local administration have worked collaboratively to ensure the safe repatriation of the fishermen.
Repatriating the fishermen is not only a matter of humanitarian concern but also an affirmation of the importance of peaceful relations between India and Bangladesh. Both nations recognize the critical role of the fishing communities in their respective economies, as these communities heavily rely on fishing as a primary source of livelihood. By facilitating this repatriation, both governments demonstrate their commitment to protecting the welfare of their fishermen and maintaining peaceful cooperation in the region.
This humanitarian operation is a positive step towards improving bilateral relations and promoting mutual respect for the safety and well-being of all citizens. The cooperation between the India and Bangladesh Coast Guards, as well as the coordination of government ministries, showcases the ability of both countries to resolve issues diplomatically and ensure the prosperity of their communities.
