In a significant diplomatic development, India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held their inaugural Foreign Ministers meeting in Riyadh, marking a pivotal moment in their bilateral relations. The core of this meeting was the adoption of a new Joint Action Plan for 2024-2028, which aims to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors including health, trade, agriculture, food security, transportation, energy, and culture. This comprehensive plan allows for the inclusion of additional cooperative areas as mutually agreed upon by both parties.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the meeting, underscoring India's strong and enduring relationship with the GCC. He urged for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis, reiterating India's position on the Palestinian issue, which advocates for a two-state solution. Jaishankar’s statement reflects India's commitment to humanitarian principles and its active role in addressing regional conflicts.
The meeting also served as a platform to emphasize the historical, cultural, and economic ties between India and the GCC. Jaishankar highlighted the GCC’s importance as India's "extended" neighborhood and expressed appreciation for their support of the large Indian diaspora in the Gulf region. This gathering not only reviewed the positive trajectory in India-GCC relations but also stressed the significance of security and cooperation in an increasingly multipolar world.
In addition to discussions with GCC foreign ministers, Jaishankar engaged with notable figures such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the Brazilian Foreign Minister, discussing bilateral and regional issues, including the Prime Minister’s visit to Ukraine.
The Joint Action Plan marks a new chapter in the partnership between India and the GCC, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration and mutual growth over the coming years. It highlights the ongoing commitment to fostering regional stability and economic development, reflecting a shared vision for a prosperous future.
