Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared key developments in India’s rapidly growing semiconductor industry at the SEMICON India 2024 summit, held at the India Expo Mart. He announced that five semiconductor manufacturing units have been approved and are currently under construction, marking a significant milestone for India’s ambition to become a global leader in semiconductor production.
Among these units, Micron and the Morigaon Tata units are already under construction, with the remaining three set to begin their development soon. The announcement highlights the government’s commitment to bolstering India’s semiconductor sector, which is expected to play a pivotal role in various industries such as automotive, medical, industrial, transport, and consumer electronics.
Semicon 2.0 Policy to Launch Soon
In addition to the current progress, Vaishnaw revealed that the government is preparing to introduce Semicon 2.0, an expanded version of the existing semiconductor policy. Expected to roll out within the next 3-4 months, this new policy will further strengthen India’s semiconductor initiatives, driving investments, research, and talent development in the sector. The new phase of the policy is aligned with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision to make technology more accessible through initiatives like Digital India and Telecom missions.
India’s semiconductor ambitions are not just focused on manufacturing; they also prioritize talent development and research. Lam Research’s Semiverse Programme has been instrumental in training 2,600 students across 74 universities this year alone, contributing to the government’s goal of training 85,000 engineers and technicians over the next decade. This skilled workforce will ensure India remains competitive in the global semiconductor landscape.
State-Level Investments and New Units in Uttar Pradesh
Vaishnaw also mentioned that 3 to 4 states have successfully attracted semiconductor investments, with Uttar Pradesh emerging as a key location for a new semiconductor unit. The government is actively fostering partnerships and creating a conducive environment for semiconductor companies to invest and grow in India.
Major Design and Validation Centres Launched
India’s semiconductor journey also includes significant advancements in design and validation. The AMB design centre inaugurated its first global facility in Bengaluru, employing around 5,000 engineers. In addition, Applied Materials has launched its first India validation centre, further cementing India’s position as a hub for semiconductor research and development.
A Vision for the Future
As the demand for semiconductors continues to rise across various sectors, India’s focus on building a robust semiconductor ecosystem is crucial. Vaishnaw emphasized that the growth of semiconductor units will drive exponential expansion across industries, ensuring India remains at the forefront of global technological advancements.
India’s semiconductor sector is set for rapid growth, supported by government policies, strategic investments, and a focus on talent development. The introduction of Semicon 2.0 is expected to bring even more opportunities, making India a major player in the global semiconductor landscape.
