What's covered under the article:

  1. India defeated England by four wickets, securing their first ODI win in 449 days.
  2. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer led India’s chase, while Rohit Sharma struggled.
  3. Debutant Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each to restrict England.

In a much-needed victory, India registered its first ODI win in 449 days, defeating England by four wickets in the first match of the ODI series at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. However, Rohit Sharma’s continued struggles with the bat remain a major concern ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.

England’s Batting Performance: Harshit Rana and Jadeja Shine

Batting first, England looked strong initially, with openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett setting a solid foundation. However, debutant Harshit Rana made a stunning comeback after conceding 26 runs in his third over, dismissing Duckett, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone in quick succession.

Despite setbacks, England’s captain Jos Buttler (52) and Jacob Bethell (51) built a crucial partnership to push the total forward. Jofra Archer chipped in with a valuable 21-run cameo, but England could only post 248 runs, as Ravindra Jadeja (3/42) and Harshit Rana (3/51) ensured the visitors never gained full control.

India’s Chase: Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer Lead the Way

With focus on Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, the chase started with another disappointing outing for the Indian skipper. Rohit managed just six runs, continuing his poor ODI form. Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal also failed to impress, leaving India in early trouble.

However, Shubman Gill (87 off 102), battling a hamstring issue, took charge of the innings. Shreyas Iyer (59 off 36), who was dropped from the last ODI against Sri Lanka, returned in style, playing a crucial role in easing the pressure.

KL Rahul’s struggles continued, as he managed only two runs before getting dismissed. If his form doesn’t improve, Rishabh Pant could replace him in the upcoming matches.

A surprising move saw Axar Patel promoted up the order, and the all-rounder delivered with a well-constructed 52 off 47 balls, ensuring India crossed the finish line comfortably.

India’s First ODI Win Since November 2023

This victory marked India’s first ODI win in 449 days, with their last success coming in the 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Since then, India lost the final to Australia and suffered a 3-0 series whitewash against Sri Lanka in 2024.

With the Champions Trophy 2025 approaching, India will need to sort out their batting concerns, particularly Rohit Sharma’s form. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and debutant Harshit Rana’s performances were positive takeaways from the match.
