  • INDIA bloc holds first in-person meeting in 14 months, deciding to contest Vice-Presidential election despite odds.

  • Leaders say move is to ensure no walkover for government, reinforcing message of opposition unity.

  • Decision comes amid ongoing political tensions in Parliament and upcoming Presidential polls.

In a significant political move aimed at reinforcing opposition unity, the INDIA bloc has decided to contest the upcoming Vice-Presidential elections, even though it acknowledges it does not have the required numbers to secure a victory.

The decision was taken during the alliance’s first physical meeting in 14 months, held in New Delhi on Thursday, where a select group of senior leaders from various opposition parties gathered to discuss the political strategy ahead of the elections. Sources within the bloc said that the decision was made not on the basis of numerical strength, but on the principle of not allowing the ruling government a walkover in such a key constitutional contest.

The Vice-Presidential polls are expected to take place shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing Presidential election process. Leaders of the bloc stated that their participation in the Vice-Presidential race is aimed at sending a strong message that the opposition will continue to engage actively in the democratic process, regardless of the odds.

One senior leader present at the meeting said, “We know the numbers are stacked against us, but this is not just about winning or losing. This is about showing the people that we are here to fight, to question, and to keep the government accountable.”

The INDIA bloc — an alliance of multiple opposition parties formed to present a united front against the ruling party — has faced internal challenges over the past year, with differences in state-level politics occasionally straining relations. However, Thursday’s meeting marked a renewed attempt to project cohesion and purpose on the national stage.

The meeting also saw discussions on other pressing political issues, including the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where the opposition has been staging protests over governance concerns, policy decisions, and alleged democratic backsliding. The bloc’s leaders believe that participating in the Vice-Presidential polls, even symbolically, will help sustain momentum in their broader political campaign.

Historically, the Vice-Presidential elections have been closely contested only when the opposition was able to rally significant parliamentary support. In the current scenario, the ruling party and its allies enjoy a comfortable majority in both Houses, making a victory for the opposition unlikely. Still, by fielding a candidate, the INDIA bloc hopes to galvanise its support base, create a platform to discuss constitutional values, and underscore its commitment to parliamentary democracy.

Political analysts say the move could have long-term strategic benefits for the bloc. Even in defeat, the act of contesting ensures visibility and keeps the alliance relevant in the political discourse. More importantly, it prevents the ruling party from claiming an unopposed victory, which could be framed as a sign of opposition weakness.

The decision is also likely to open negotiations over who the INDIA bloc’s Vice-Presidential candidate will be. Names of senior parliamentarians, former governors, and party veterans are expected to be discussed in the coming days. The candidate selection process itself could serve as an exercise in building internal consensus, a skill the bloc will need for future electoral battles.

The Vice President of India plays a crucial role as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, responsible for maintaining order during debates, managing legislative procedures, and ensuring fair conduct in the Upper House. In recent years, this position has gained greater visibility due to heightened parliamentary confrontations and frequent disruptions.

By stepping into the Vice-Presidential race, the INDIA bloc is signalling that it will not remain passive in the face of political challenges. While the numbers may not be in its favour, the symbolism of participation — and the political narrative it creates — could resonate with sections of the electorate who value resistance over resignation.

As the election date draws closer, the ruling party is expected to finalise its candidate, likely a figure with strong parliamentary credentials and loyalty to the leadership. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc’s challenge will be to finalise a nominee who can articulate the opposition’s vision and command respect across party lines.

In the coming weeks, the Vice-Presidential election will become another arena where India’s deepening political polarisation will play out — not just as a contest for an important constitutional post, but as a battle over democratic participation, visibility, and moral positioning.
