INDIA bloc’s Vice-Presidential nominee, former Supreme Court Judge B Sudershan Reddy, filed his nomination on August 21 in the presence of key Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The event also saw support from NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, and several other alliance leaders, signaling strong Opposition backing for Reddy’s candidacy.
Reddy expressed optimism about receiving support across party lines, emphasizing that the election is a battle of ideology rather than mere numbers. He stated, “Numbers matter continues…Of course, I am hopeful. Since I don’t belong to any political party, I believe everyone would support me…I made it very clear yesterday. It is the battle of ideology.”
The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, 2025, with counting to take place on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates may withdraw their nominations until August 25.
Reddy will contest against National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan, who filed his nomination on August 20 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, citing health reasons, creating a vacancy in the office of the Vice President.
The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college, consisting of members of both houses of Parliament. The election process is governed by Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution, and conducted via proportional representation using the single transferable vote system. Voting is carried out by secret ballot, as per Article 66(1) of the Constitution.
Reddy’s nomination reflects a strategic move by the INDIA bloc to present a consensus candidate with a judicial background, highlighting ideological unity and cross-party support. Analysts note that this approach positions Reddy as a non-partisan choice, potentially appealing to MPs across the political spectrum, in contrast to the NDA’s candidate, CP Radhakrishnan.
With the Vice President polls approaching, political observers are closely watching how the Opposition and NDA mobilize support among MPs, the dynamics of cross-party endorsements, and the broader implications for parliamentary politics in India. The election, while procedural, carries significant symbolic and political weight, reflecting the balance of power and ideological representation in the country’s second-highest constitutional office.
