India has raised concerns regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, particularly after the release of violent extremists who had been sentenced for serious crimes. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue in a media briefing, highlighting India’s concerns about the security and welfare of minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
India’s Concern Over Bangladesh’s Law and Order Situation
During the briefing, Jaiswal mentioned that India has been closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh, especially after the violent incidents involving extremist groups. He said, "We remain concerned about the deteriorating law and order situation, which has worsened following the release of violent extremists who were convicted of serious crimes." India’s concern stems from the fact that such actions have put vulnerable minority communities at risk.
Jaiswal emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Bangladesh interim government to protect Hindus, other minorities, and their properties and religious institutions. This is especially critical given the numerous reports of violence targeting minority communities.
Political Violence and Accountability
Jaiswal noted that there were over 2374 incidents of violence reported from August 5, 2024, to February 16, 2025, with 1254 incidents verified by the police. Of these verified incidents, 98% were deemed political in nature. India has called on Bangladesh to investigate these incidents thoroughly and bring those responsible for killings, arson, and violence to justice, without distinguishing between political affiliations.
Support for Inclusive and Participatory Elections
India reiterated its stance on Bangladesh’s democratic process, stressing the importance of holding inclusive and participatory elections to ensure that the nation remains stable and peaceful. Jaiswal stated, "India strongly supports a stable and peaceful Bangladesh, where issues are resolved through democratic means." This reflects India's continued support for the people of Bangladesh and their right to peaceful democratic processes.
Development Cooperation Between India and Bangladesh
In addition to security concerns, Jaiswal highlighted development cooperation as a key area of focus for India in its bilateral relationship with Bangladesh. He acknowledged that the recent security situation and local issues have affected the pace of executing some of the joint projects between the two countries.
India plans to move forward with mutually agreed projects, subject to receiving the necessary support and clearances from the Bangladesh side. The priority remains on rationalizing project portfolios and ensuring that the execution of projects takes place in a timely manner, for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Conclusion
India's stance on Bangladesh underscores its commitment to supporting the welfare of minority communities while advocating for inclusive elections and a stable political environment in the neighboring country. The development cooperation between the two countries remains a priority, with India aiming to overcome any challenges posed by the current security situation in Bangladesh.
