- Indigenous Imaging Infra-Red Seeker: Used for terminal guidance, ensuring high precision in targeting.
- High Bandwidth Two-Way Data Link: Transmits live seeker images back to the pilot, assisting in effective decision-making.
- Bearing-Only Lock-on Mode: The missile can lock onto a target after launch, even when multiple potential targets are nearby.
- Mid-Course Guidance System: Features an indigenous Fiber Optic Gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Radio Altimeter for accurate trajectory control.
- Advanced Warhead and Propulsion: Uses a solid propulsion system, featuring an in-line ejectable booster and long-burn sustainer for extended range and endurance.
Precision Targeting and Flight Capabilities
The successful NASM-SR trial was conducted in a sea-skimming mode, a technique where the missile flies low over the water to avoid radar detection, making it harder for enemy ships to intercept. The Man-in-Loop feature was successfully tested, proving that the missile could be retargeted mid-flight.
During the test, the missile initially locked onto a large ship target within a specified zone. However, during the terminal phase, the pilot was able to redirect it toward a smaller hidden target, hitting it with pinpoint accuracy. This demonstrates the missile’s capability to distinguish and prioritize multiple targets in a combat scenario, a crucial feature in modern naval warfare.

The NASM-SR missile is the result of extensive research by multiple DRDO labs, including:
- Research Centre Imarat (RCI) – Developed the guidance and control system.
- Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) – Worked on the propulsion and structural integrity of the missile.
- High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) – Developed the solid propulsion system and warhead technology.
- Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) – Focused on impact dynamics and penetration capabilities.
The missile is currently in production with the support of Development cum Production Partners (DcPPs), Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and other production partners, making it a key example of India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
