  1. India halted its military response within three days after Operation Sindoor achieved all its objectives, followed by a strategic ceasefire.

  2. The Indian Air Force conducted BrahMos missile strikes on Pakistan’s key airports after LoC firing caused civilian and soldier casualties.

  3. India maintains high alert post-ceasefire, signaling firm action against future provocations, while strengthening defence ties with the US and Brazil.

In a recent interview at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan shed light on India’s military response to Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. The cross-border operation, named Operation Sindoor, saw India strike nine strategic targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in early May 2025. After accomplishing its objectives within three days, India halted its military actions and agreed to a ceasefire as part of a broader strategic planning approach.

Operation Sindoor and India’s Response to Provocations

Operation Sindoor was launched as a measured and calibrated military response to Pakistan’s continuing support and sheltering of terrorist activities targeting Indian civilians. According to General Chauhan, India struck nine high-value targets on the night of May 7, signaling a decisive message against terrorism. During the subsequent days, Pakistan retaliated with firing along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in casualties including 15 Indian civilians and one soldier.

In response to the escalation on May 10, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed BrahMos cruise missile strikes targeting Pakistan’s Noor Khan and Chaklala airports in Rawalpindi. These strikes were designed to significantly degrade Pakistan’s military capabilities and demonstrate India’s resolve. Shortly after, Pakistan sought a ceasefire, which India accepted, showcasing restraint after achieving clear military goals.

Strategic and Long-Term Approach

General Chauhan emphasized that India’s decision to stop the operation after three days was deliberate and part of a long-term strategic vision. Since independence in 1947, India has maintained a policy of strategic clarity and autonomy in dealing with Pakistan, despite Pakistan historically having advantages in certain areas. India’s significant progress in economic, social, and human development is seen as an outcome of this sustained strategy.

Despite efforts to improve bilateral relations—such as the invitation extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to then-Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2014—Pakistan has consistently responded with hostility. Hence, maintaining a strategic distance remains the most prudent course of action to safeguard India’s national interests.

Post-Ceasefire Security and Diplomatic Engagements

General Chauhan clarified that despite the ceasefire, the Indian armed forces remain on high alert along the border. There is a clear and strong message that any further provocations will be met with firm and decisive responses. Operation Sindoor thus reinforced India’s capability and commitment to not remain silent in the face of terrorism.

Additionally, General Chauhan engaged in discussions with Admiral Samuel J Paparo, Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM). Their talks focused on Operation Sindoor, enhancing military cooperation, and strengthening collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region amid evolving security challenges. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic ties and addressing emerging threats.

India and Brazil Strengthen Bilateral Ties

On the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue 2025, India and Brazil reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Both countries emphasized collaboration on regional security, maritime freedom, and sustainable development. This partnership reflects India’s growing role in fostering multi-lateral relationships to ensure regional stability and prosperity.

This detailed explanation highlights India’s strategic military and diplomatic responses during and after Operation Sindoor, reflecting a balance of firm defense and proactive international cooperation. The episode underscores India’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty while engaging with global partners to navigate complex regional security dynamics.
