India's Ministry of Culture has launched the Global Engagement Scheme to promote India’s rich cultural heritage globally and enhance its international image. The scheme aims to strengthen cultural ties between India and other nations, increase bilateral cultural exchanges, and boost inbound tourism. The initiative was officially announced by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in the Lok Sabha on March 18, 2025.

• Festival of India: This initiative provides Indian artists with opportunities to perform on international platforms across various cultural fields like folk art, classical music, traditional dance, and theatre. • Indo-Foreign Friendship Cultural Societies: The scheme offers grant-in-aid to Indo-Foreign Friendship Cultural Societies to foster cultural exchange and promote mutual understanding between India and foreign nations. These societies play a vital role in facilitating cross-cultural collaborations and strengthening bilateral cultural ties.

Role of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is at the core of this initiative, playing a pivotal role in promoting Indian culture across the globe. The ICCR will:

• Organise Yoga, Dance, and Music Programs: The scheme will enable the promotion of traditional Indian practices, such as yoga, classical dance, and Indian music in various countries.
• Language Classes and Exhibitions: The ICCR will facilitate language classes for individuals interested in learning Hindi, Sanskrit, and other Indian languages, alongside organising exhibitions showcasing India’s art, history, and culture.
• International Conferences: The ICCR will also host international cultural conferences, providing a platform for scholars, artists, and cultural enthusiasts to engage in discussions and share insights about India’s cultural heritage.

Financial Support for Artists and Groups

To support the initiative, the Ministry of Culture has empanelled 627 artists and cultural groups, offering them financial assistance for international performances. The support structure includes:

• Performance Fees: Lead artists will receive Rs. 35,000 (US$ 403.31) per performance, while accompanying artists will be given Rs. 7,000 (US$ 80.66). This financial support helps reduce the barriers to showcasing Indian talent on the global stage.
• Financial Assistance for Veteran Artists Scheme: This component of the scheme provides monthly financial aid of up to Rs. 6,000 (US$ 69.14) for elderly and economically disadvantaged artists aged 60 years and above. The initiative aims to support senior artists who have contributed significantly to the cultural landscape but face financial challenges due to age or economic constraints.

The Global Engagement Scheme is designed to promote global collaboration and cultural diplomacy.
