India Monsoon LIVE: Odisha Evacuates as Floodwaters Enter Balasore, Mayurbhanj; Heavy Rainfall Alert in Himachal Pradesh

NEW DELHI / BHUBANESWAR:
Monsoon rains continued to batter large parts of India on Monday (June 30, 2025), triggering floods in Odisha, severe water logging in Jharkhand, and prompting heavy rainfall alerts in Himachal Pradesh.

Odisha authorities said they have launched large-scale evacuation operations in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts after floodwaters from swollen rivers entered villages, inundating homes and farmland.

“We are prioritising vulnerable areas for evacuation and ensuring food and medical aid in temporary shelters,” an Odisha disaster management official said.

Rescue teams, including the ODRAF and fire service units, have been deployed to move people to safer areas. Boats and other equipment are being used to ferry stranded residents as rivers like the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga swell beyond danger marks.

Odisha Flood Situation

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner’s office confirmed rising water levels in Balasore town and surrounding blocks.

  • Balasore: Several panchayats flooded; road links cut off in low-lying areas.

  • Mayurbhanj: Rivers overflowing banks, villages submerged.

  • Evacuations ongoing in vulnerable pockets, with over 5,000 people shifted by Monday evening.

  • Relief camps set up with food, water, medical care.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall over Odisha’s northern districts for the next 48 hours.

Monsoon Conditions Across India

Delhi: Light Showers, Pleasant Weather

Delhi residents experienced mild showers on Monday, bringing some respite from the heat. IMD forecasts intermittent rain over the next two days, with temperatures likely to hover around 33–35°C.

  • Warnings of landslides, flash floods in hilly terrain.

  • Tourists advised to check weather bulletins before travel.

Local administrations have asked residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant.

Jharkhand: Water Logging in Kolhan Region

Heavy downpours caused severe water logging in parts of Kolhan division, including Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, and Chakradharpur.

  • Streets turned into streams, disrupting traffic.

  • Shops and homes in low-lying areas partially submerged.

  • Authorities deploying pumps to drain excess water.

Residents complained about poor drainage worsening the crisis during this monsoon spell.

  • Punjab: Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar among districts with heavy showers.

  • Haryana: Panchkula, Ambala, and Yamunanagar affected.

  • Water accumulation on roads, impacting traffic flow.

Agricultural experts welcomed the rain for kharif sowing but warned of potential damage if flooding persists.

Key predictions:

  • Heavy to very heavy rain over Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and East UP.

  • Moderate showers in Delhi-NCR.

The monsoon’s progression will be closely watched by authorities and citizens alike in the coming weeks as India balances the boon of rain with the need for preparedness and safety.
